Dunggas Muslim Village


Accessible in 30 minutes by boat from Davao City Babak. It boasts of its houses on stilts, fishing village, authentic Muslim dances presented by arrangement, native way of salt-making, mat weaving from dyed dried pandan leaves, white-sand beach, caves, sea shell hunting, skin and scuba diving, and island fronting the village which is called "Sanipan Island", an ideal place for picnicking juring low tide. Talicud Caves


(Talicud, Kaputian, a 45 minute ride on motorized banca). There are 3 separate caves; two small entrances where giant pythons dwell; subterranean tunnel is said to cross Davao Gulf. Davao Fruits Corporation (New Bataan, 10 kms


from Tagum or a 2.5-hour ride from Tagum). A tourist may opt to visit its packing house, banana plantation and cockpit near the plantation.

 

The terrain of Davao del Norte consists of flat, rolling and mountainous portions which are evenly located throughtout Davao del Norte. Davao del Norte is flanked by Bukidnon on the west, on the north by Agusan del Sur and on the south by the Gulf of Davao and Davao City.

It is traversed by 32 rivers, the biggest of which is the Agusan River. Fertile and muddy strips of land located along major river banks and swampy and agricultural patches of land are foundd along the shorelines.Some of these areas are converted productively into fishponds of cultured bangus, shrimps and crabs for the consumption of nearby provinces and sometimes, Manila.

Davao has expanded from 13 to 21 municipalities. It has a total land area of 812,875 hectares of which approximately 284,685 hectares are devoted to various agricultural activities. Samal and Talicud islands are parts of Davao del Norte. It is composed of 355 regular barangays and fifty (50) regular barangays and fifty (50) special barangays. Tagum is Davao del Norte's provincial capital.

During the 1939 census, davao del Norte was then part of the Comandencia of davao, which lies in the southeastern section of Mindanao. OnMay 8, 1967, davao del Norte, together with Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur was cerated under R.A. No. 4867. Then on June 17, 1972 under R.S. #6430, the name Davao del Norte was changed simply to Davao.

The province Davao del Norte has a relatively uniform temperature of 27°C. The hottest month is April and the coldest months are December and February. It has three types of rainfall; the eastern part composed of more than half of the total land area and has a type of climate characterized by no dry season with very pronounced maximum rainfall from November to January. Less than half of the western side has another type of climate characterized by rainfall more or less evenly distributed throughout the year. A small portion of the northwestern tip of Davao del Norte has a climate relatively dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year.

. Cebuano is the major dialect in the province of Davao del Norte. Other tribes which are found in the hinterlands are the Tibi-Tibi; Taloingod, Mandaya and a mixture of Tagalog, Chinese, Ilongo, Pampangueño and Ilocano.

Davao del Norte is popularly known for its mining, quarrying and extracting industry. Four big mining companies operate in Davao del Norte province, namely: North Davao Mines, and Apex Mines in Maco, Sabena, Mining Exploration in New Bataan and the Black Mountain.

Other industries are warehousing and storeage and cottage industry, as well as fishing industry (municipal and island fishing), and large banana plantations.

Points of interest

Bo. Bullocan Cultural Community Resettlements. (Asuncion). A cultural community of three different tribes: the Mandaya, Nansaka and the Dibabaon. The settlements are on a wide plain suitable for agriculture. Among the things to see are: Colorful costumes of the tribes, authentic tribal dance which could be presented by arrangement, the native and musical instrumentss such as "Kudlong" antique gongs and shells.

Maragusan Mansaka Community (San Mariano). More than 76 kms. from Tagum passing thru the municipality of Mawab, about two and a half hours ride by passenger vehicles and four hours via Mati, Davao Oriental.

The community is composed of Christians and of Mansakas whose culture is still unadulterated by the outside world. Among the attractions of the place are the authentic native dances which could be presented upon arrangement with the chieftain of the tribe, the native´s tribal jewelry complete with antique necklace, glassbeads jade, shells and silver breast plates, mansaka musical instruments such as the "kudlong", "Paradag" and "Takol", a native saxophone as well as their antique bells and gongs. Virgin forests, hot springs, wild flora and fauna, orchids of varied species abound. The Mansaka catholic dances and songs are incorporated in the mass presented during the offertory.

The Mansaka inhabitants of Maragusan outnumber the Visayan pioneers. The natives still cling to the primitive ways of agriculture. No evidence of crop rotation of any kind is practiced; the natives, however, most of them depend on coffee as their livelihood. The drowsy ofternoons of the community are characterized by men and women playing the Kudlong or the Takol with short dancing session.

At night the natives gather around the flickering oil lamps of their "umpo" or grandfather who tells a story or listed to an old woman or a young lady who relates to Mansaka folk tale accompanied by the parandag.

Aeta Settlement (Kapalong). Hanging bridge and waterfalls can be found in this settlement.

Tibi-Tibi Cultural Community. (Angelo, Kapalong). It is a Panamin Project and has a total land area of 10,000 hectares. The settlement is intended for Talaingod (Aetas).

Ligid Island. (Babak, 53 kms. southeast of Tagum and 18 kms. north from Davao City). An hectare of which one-fourth is planted with coconut trees and the rest is under-developed. It is situated beside the Palma Gil Island.

Archeological diggings in 1970 underearthed skeletons, Chinese vases, procelain jars and Kalagan artifacts in the Ligid caves. Its forest is an ideal place for hunting snakes and birds. Its white sand beach is ideal for swimming.

Caliclic Cave. (Barrio Caliclic, Babak). The cave is known to have four rooms with skeletal remains believed to be those of the Kalagan tribes.

Samal Municipality. It boasts of a waterfall at Haguimit, white sand beach, caves Moncado settlement at Limao, Ma-ag, Upper Peñaplata, Muslim Village at San Jose.

Samal Beach Club. (Peñaplata, Samal Island). It offers white, sandy beaches, crystal clean waters, coral reefs, exotic flowers, comfortable bungalows in bamboo under the coconut trees, natural life in the paradise.

Mainit Spring. Located 22.5 kms. north of Tagum and a half km. away from Masara Mines. Among its attractions are bathing at the foot of the waterfalls from 6:00 to 10:00 AM when the water is still warm, Maputi Spring, Cawa-Cawa Waterfalls, Dizon farm and guesthouse.

Mainit Hot Spring. Located 43 kms. from Tagum. Its attractions are Hot spring at Barrio Mainit, two rivers that meet - one coming from the cold spring and the other from the hot spring, rubber plantation, cultural community.

Bangoy Island beach resort. Located in front of Aguinaldo Pearl Farm. It boasts of its white sand beach, marine and coral gardens, and caves. Ideal site for skin and scuba diving, and fishing. A 7-hectare island surrounded with gigantic corals are among the products this beach resort can offer.

La Paz Beach Resort. An ideal destination for swimming, snorkeling, boating and sunbathing.

Dayang Beach Resort (Dadatan, Talikud Island). Located in a white sand beach and in blue-green crystal clear water of Davao Gulf about 45 minutes from Davao City with picnic huts and resthouses made of native materials. It's haven from swimming and snorkeling.

Paradise Island Beach Park & Resort (Caliclic, Samal Island). Located in Samal Island in a 50-hectare beach with Magtalisay trees as shades; offers variety of foods and with very reasonable rate.

Dalisay Village. Located 22 kms. away from Tagum and can be reached in 45 minutes from the same town. The village boasts of an Aeta Village, Japanese Tea House, Orchidarium, swimming pool, mini-golf course and tennis, citrus plantation, collection of Asian plants and trees, and aviary.

Hijo Plantation (Carmen, about 10 kms. from Tagum and 45-minute ride from Davao City), A banana plantation within which are packing houses and a guesthouse

Stanfilco. Located 25 kms. south of Tagum. A banana plantation within which are banana packing plant, guesthouse and cottages.

Davao Penal Colony (Sto Tomas, 40 kms. away from Tagum and 45 kms. from Davao City). The colony´s attractions are woodcarving and woodcraft items, citrus fruit plantation, ramie plantation, rubber plantation, forest where one can hunt small games, botanical garden, lake Imelda, zoo and banana plantation.

Valdemara Lumber. Located 54 kms. north of Tagum and can be reached by all kinds of land transportation. A tourist may opt to observe in the plant a Modern lumber processing or stay in a guesthouse on top of the hill overlooking banana plantation.

Dizon Farm (Mawab, 50 kms. away from Davao City). Citrus (pomelo) fruits are scientifically grown in the farm. The fruits are chemically treated prior to crating, i.e. before shipment to Manila.
