Lanao del Norte´s main City was aptly named "gateway to the South". A visit to Iligan City at once opens one´s heart and mind into the essence of Mindanao, its contrasting and yet compelling qualities. Iligan provides both the wonders of nature and industrial attractions which soothe a cosmopolitan´s frayed nerves without lulling him into forgetting the challenges of an urban life.

Iligan City is strategically located in the northern coast of Mindanao which faces Iligan Bay. The City is bounded on the south by the towns of Linamon and Baloi, both of Lanao del Norte; on the north by Misamis Oriental´s municipality of Lugait; on the east by territories of Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon provinces; and on the west by Iligan Bay. It became a chartered city in June 1950 and was named as one of the country´s 9 highly urbanized cities in 1983 when the local government code was passed.

Iligan City, the city of Lanao del Norte,is an important transportation center on the north coast of Mindanao, and the gateway to the fascinating Muslim area of Marawi and Lake Lanao.

Lanao del Norte is the home of Maria Cristina Falls. Lanao del Norte(3,092 square km) stretches east from the narrow isthmus that separatesthe Zamboanga peninsula from the Mindanao mainland. It's lined by Panguil and Iligan bays on the north and the Illana Bay on the south. Coastal plains, mangrove-covered in the places, are backed by foothills reaching about 300 meters, interpersed with lowland areas. The province's northwest is mountainous, while a chain of volcanoes forms its interior southern boundary.

The province has an irregular topography, about 44% of its extremities are mountains, but towards the coast in the north, the land surface is slightly rolling with low hills and gentle slopes along the coast of Panguil Bay, poorly drained lowlands covered with mangrove can be found. Several rivers traverse the province. The most important of them is the Agus River which feeds the Maria Cristina Falls, one of the major source of hydro-electric power for the provinces and neighboring provinces.

Political Subdivision. 23 municipalities and 1 city comprise the province with Iligan City, a highly industrial community, servicing as the provincial capital in the past.Tubod is the province's capital. With the new Governor at present, the provincial capital of the province was transferred to Tubod, one of the progressive municipality of the province.

In Lanao del Sur the Maranaos predominate, while in Lanao del Norte the majority of the Maranaos concentrate in the towns near the border of Maranao. Maranao dialect is used in the Maranao communities.

The proximity of the north coast of the province to central Visayas Island has made the area an ideal migration destination for Cebuano - speaking population for the 80,602 private households, 77.0 % speak Cebuano. Urban areas as well as rural areas are predominated by household speaking the same dialect with 90.80 % and 74.63 %, respectively. Maranao the second commonly used dialect comprised 21.16 %. Only 0.66 % speak Tagalog, 0.1%, Hiligaynon (Ilongo) and 0.09 %, Lineyte - or Waray.

Major Industries.  Agriculture, fishing and forestry are the dominant source of income in Lanao del Norte. Community, social and personal services constitute the second group. The third in rank are educational services, public administration and defense, and manufacturing. Mining and quarrying have the lowest percentage.

The harnessing of the Maria Cristina Falls as source of power spurred the industrial growth of the Iligan Metropolis and eventually of Mindanao. Iligan City originated from a woodland village covered with growth of trees and under brust known as Bayug, located three to four kilometers away from today´s bustling metropolis.

Aside from being the source of power, the province also engages in the manufacture of steel, bricks, wheat flour and its related products, and cement; production of liquid chlorine, poly-vinyl, caustic soda, hydroelectric acid, electrometallurgical products, and coconut oil.

ILIGAN CITY

Iligan is the provincial capital, a port, and industrial city of about 178,000 inhabitants, situated on the coastal plain where the Iligan River flows into Iligan Bay. This former Jesuit missionary center and site of a Spanish fort is now a center of heavy industry-- steel, tinplate, pulp and paper, with flour mills, fertilizer, plastic, chemical and cement factories on its outrisks.

Brief history. Due to the massive influx of Christian settlers in the coastal area of the then province of Lanao, the province was subdivided into what is now Lanao del Sur with pre-dominant Christian population by virtue of Republic Act. No. 2228 on May 22, 1959.

Lanao del Norte has been affected by the secession movement that hit Mindanao during the recent few years. Its growth and development has proceeded at a fast fare during the past and current heads and the continued availability of hydro-electric power augurs well for the future of the province.

Lanao del Norte has a short mild dry season from January to April covering and average monthly rainfall of three inches. The wet season lasts from May to december with seven inches monthly average rainfal. The annual temperature is 80°F.
