Pedal-powered trishaws can get you anywhere within Georgetown. This one was parked in the shade, its driver enjoying an afternoon snooze.

Downtown Georgetown is full of interesting characters. This gentleman came and stood in front of my camera and refused to get out of the way until I took his picture. Actually, he stood there even after I had taken his picture.

The Petronas Towers are amongst the world's tallest buildings. I thought they were particularly unattractive.
  • Singapore - Orchard Road
I returned to this spot every evening for four days before the lighting proved just right. I loved the juxtaposition of the huge billboard of Claudia Schiffer with the mural of the frightening figure below.

High-rise big name hotels in the background, kids sleeping on pieces of cardboard in the foreground. I was walking around the downtown area one night and noticed three barefoot children following after their mother. As they were walking, the children passed a small plastic bag from one to the other, pausing briefly to bring the bag up to their faces. My puzzlement about this must have shown, because a man passing by explained that the bag probably had a dab of glue in the bottom and that inhaling the fumes took away hunger pains. Travelling can be a very humbling experience.

Getting around Manila is a bit daunting at first. Taxis are plentiful but explaining where you want to go can be a frustrating experience. There's only one cathedral, but my taxi driver had to ask fellow road users how to get there. Brightly colored and extravagantly ornamented jeepneys are everywhere but follow set routes which are more useful for locals.
