Evert Antonius Van Der Grist, (Tailor), from Charlois and his sons Leendert, Jan and Abraham Evertse Van Der Grist have given thir citizens oath the 26th day of October 1612, Rec's Arch Amsterdam. Leendert Evertz VANDERGRIFT was born about 1587 in Charlois, S-Holl, Netherlands. Leendert Evertsz Van Der Grist, born Charlois, S-Holland. He was married June 27, 1609 at Aechen, Nordrhein-Westfln, Prussia or West Germany. He was married to Maritje POUWELSD on 27 Jun 1609. This family lived in Amsterdam, Holland. They attended Old and New Churches in Amsterdam. The children were baptized in both churches. Two of the children, Paulus Lendertsz and Jacob Lendertsz migrated from Holland before 1644, and settled in New Amsterdam, now New York City. When they came to America, both of these brothers were employees of the West India Company. Maritje POUWELSD was born about 1585 in Aechen, Nordrhein-Westfln, Prussia. Paulus Leendertsz VANDERGRIFT was christened on 20 Oct 1613 in Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands. Paulus was Captain of the ship "Neptune" until 1645, then the ship "Great Garritt" until 1646. He served a term as Naval Officer, was a member of the Council 1647-1648, Burgermaster 1657-1658 and 1661-1664. He was also Orphan Master from 1656 to 1660, and member of the Convention for two terms, 1653 and 1663. On February 21, 1664 he and Alland Anthony were co-patroons of the new settlement of Noorthwyck, on the North River. Paulus was an important figure in the government of New Netherland, accompanying Director Peter Stuyvesant, in 1654, on a journey to Curacoa in the West Indies. He also had a role in the signing of the peace treaty between the Dutch and the Esopus Indians in 1664. Additionally, he was a signer of the Ratification of the Articles of Capitulation, relinquishing New Netherland to the English, also in 1664. He was married to Jannetje GERRETSD on 13 Feb 1641. Paulus Leendertsz VANDERGRIFT and Jannetje GERRETSD had the following children: 13 i. Grietje VANDERGRIFT was baptized on 1 Dec 1641 in Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands. 14 ii. Johannes VANDERGRIFT was baptized on 19 Jun 1658 in New Amsterdam, New York. 11. Jacob Leendertsz VANDERGRIFT was christened on 23 Oct 1622 in Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands. Jacob Lendertsen Van Der Grist was also in the employ and service of the West India Company of Holland as Captain of the ship "Swel", lying between Curecea and the New Netherlands. It carried 22 guns and 76 men, and in 1644 it was directed to New Amsterdam and on arriving, it was sold due to its age. Jacob then, in 1644 remained in New Amsterdam and became a bottler. On July 19th 1648, he married Rebecca Fredricks Lubbertsen, daughter of Fredrick Lubbertz and Styntje Jansd. Having married well, Jacob prospered in more than one way. On March 7, 1652 he was commissioned by the Burgermaster as measure of the Grain & Co., and in 1656 he was made a "Small Burger" of New Amsterdam. In 1662 he was a resident of Bergen, New Jersey - on May 29, 1662 he moved to Breakelyn, Long Island, and in 1665 he moved onto the Strand of North River (The Hudson), where he was asked to account of the expense of quartering 100 English soldiers on the Dutch Burgers. On October 9, 1667 he received a patent from Governor Nicholis for the land on the island of Manhatten, on the North side of the Great Creek (Harlem River), which in 1668 he sold to Isaac Bedloe. He then moved to Noordwyck on the North River. When and where he purchased this land from his brother Paulus. Between this date and 1686, he again moved to Newton or Newtown, Long Island, and continued to live there with his wife and family until he died. We believe he is buried in the cemetery of the Old Dutch Reformed Church in Newtown (now known as Elmhurst, Long Island). He was married to Rebecca Fredricksd LUBBERTSEN (daughter of Frederick LUBBERTSEN and Styntje HENDRICKSE JANS) on 19 Jul 1648. In 1696 a migration of Dutch people of New York and Long Island took place, with the people moving southward into and through New Jersey. The families dropped off here and there making their new homes. In this migration was the widow of Jacob Lubbertsen Van Der Grist, and her 8 children with their spouses and children. Some came as far south as Burlington, New Jersey, and in 1697 crossed the Delaware River, landing in Bristol, Bensalem Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They chose to settle a little further down river, and bought 4 farms from the original owner, by deed or grant from William Penn, whose name was Joseph Grawden, who received this title and a very large tract of land, encompassing 12,000 acres. The 4 farms adjoined each other, and were bordered on the East by the Delaware River, the town of Eddington, Bucks County, and the creek separating Bucks and Philadelphia Counties on the North. The combined acreage of the 4 farms was 757 acres, and the family chose the middle of the tract for its living settlement.1 Rebecca Fredricksd LUBBERTSEN was christened on 15 Aug 1628 in Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands. Rebecca's father, Fredrick Lubbertsz was a large land owner in Breakeln (Brooklyn), New Amsterdam (New York). The earliest patents for grants of land in Breakeln N.A. made by Dutch Governor, Nicholis, at New Amsterdam, were to Thomas Bescher November 23, 1639, and Frederick Lubbertsen, May 27, 1640. Margariet VANDERGRIFT was baptized on 2 May 1649 in New Amsterdam, New York. She died in 1728 in Elizabethtown, Union Co., NJ. She was married to Jacob MAURITZ on 1 Jun 1674 in Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands. Jacob MAURITZ was baptized on 10 Mar 1644 or 1645 in Haarlem, North Holland, The Netherlands. Marritie VANDERGRIFT and Gerrit VAN TRICHT had the following children: 37 i. Jannetie VAN TRICHT was baptized on 30 May 1677 in Dutch Reformed Church, New Amsterdam, New Netherland. Attending this baptism were Paulus Leendertszen Vander Grist and Grietie Vander Grist. 20. Maritje Jacobse VANDERGRIFT was baptized on 29 Aug 1649. Beginning with the fourth generation, the descendants of Maritje can be found in "Three Generations of the Corson Family in America" by Orville Corson, published in 1939. She was married to Cornelis CORSSEN on 11 Mar 1666 in New York. Cornelis CORSSEN was born in 1649. He died before Aug 1693 in New York. Cornelis appears on the assessment rolls of Brooklyn for 1675 and 1676. He was a constable in 1677 and a member of the Royal Dutch Church "hailing from the Walabocht." Cornelis and Marretje and their family left Brooklyn and moved to Staten Island where he obtained title to 352 acres to the west of Miles Creek on 24 Dec 1680 and another 180 acres on 28 Dec 1680. In 1684 he was appointed a justice of the peace for Richmond Co., New York, and on 2 apr 1685 he was appointed captain of the militia for Brooklyn. Later in 1689, he held the office of captain of the militia and justice of the peace on Staten Island. Earlier in 1681 he had purchased land on the Raritan, N.J. for 3 cents per acre. Bergen's 1881 history listed Marretje and her husband as having 3 children. A 6th child is mentioned in "The Pennsylvania Traveler Magazine", Vol. 5, May 1969, pp.10-12. This family probably remained in New York. She was married to Cornelis Jacobse SHEPPEN/SHIPPER in Sep 1678. Christine Jacobse VANDERGRIFT and Cornelis Jacobse SHEPPEN/SHIPPER had the following children: 44 i. Abraham SCHEPPEN/SHIPPER. 45 ii. Jacobus SCHEPPEN/SHIPPER was baptized on 31 May 1683. He died in 1724 or 1725 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. His estate was administered 18 Feb 1725. He was married to Christina (Styntje) ELLSWAERTS (ELSWORTH) on 3 Nov 1678. Johannes Jacobse VANDERGRIFT was christened on 26 Jun 1667. He was baptized on 26 Jun 1667. On the 5th day of January, 1697, Johannes purchased a tract of 270 acres in Bensalem Twnshp., Bucks County, from Joseph Growden. Some of it adjoined land that his brother had purchased of Growden.l This deed was recorded in the court records of Bucks County. Johannes, a yeoman, wrote his will on March 16, 1732, and named his wife and eldest son as executors. It was probated March 28, 1745 (File #518, Bucks County). The date of Neeltje's death is not known, but the Dutch Reformed Church of Neshaminy recorded the marriage of Johannes VANDEGRIFT, widower, to Elizabeth Snowden, widow, on July 1, 1741. Paulus MAURITZ was baptized on 25 Oct 1679 in New Amsterdam, New York. He was married to Margareta KETELTAS on 12 Apr 1706 in New York. 33. Margariet MAURITZ was baptized on 20 Jun 1683 in New Amsterdam, New York. She was married to Balthazar DE HART on 7 Jan 1703 in New York. 35. Jacobus MAURITZ was baptized on 18 Mar 1688 in New Amsterdam, New York. He was married to Elizabeth STEPHENS on 18 May 1710 in New York. 38. Catharina CORSSEN. Before 1701, Jacob married Elizabeth VIELE, the daughter of Cornelis Cornelisen VIELE and his wife Suster. Elizabeth was a sister to Blandina, who married Jacob's younger brother Benjamin. Jacob became a supervisor for Richmond County in 1709 and was a colonel in the militia in 1730. After the death of his father in 1693 and his mother about 1698. He bought the interest in his father's estate from his brothers and sisters. In 1712, he seemed to have inherited the share of his younger brother Daniel, who had died intestate. Thus he gained controlling interest of all the vast holdings of his father. Jacob and his wife had seven children, some were baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church of Staten Island and others were named in his will. An abstract of his will is given, naming only the surviving children - a codicil the children of his son Benjamin: The will can be found in the Surrogate Office, New York, Liber 20, pg. 51. Codicil, Dated February 3, 1742/43 Whereas I have given to my son Benjamin, one half of all my lands in Hunterdon County, West New Jersey, which I purchased of John BUDD, my executors are to pay to Jacob, son of my son Benjamin, 30 pounds out of said lands and the rest of said lands to be divided among Jacob, Sarah and Elizabeth, the children of my son Benjamin CORSEN. But if my grandson Jacob wished to keep all said lands he shall pay his sisters 2/3 value. Witnessed by: Christian CORSEN, ANtje CORSEN, Daniel CORSEN. Proved Aug. 2, 1756 The deeds for the ground that his sons acquired in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, can be found in Deed Book D, p. 18 and is situated near the branch of the Raritan or Hollands Brook. Christian was a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Richmond Co., N.Y., and was a prominent figure in the Dutch Church in Staten Island. Bergen's 1881 history, page 382, states that Cornelia married "Jannetje, daughter of Peter VanKerk. Cornelia and her husband Hendrick Kroesen settled on Staten Island where he outlived her, dying in his late 90's prior to the 29 Aug 1761 probate of his will. Cornelia and Hendrick had 6 children, all baptized in the Port Richmond Dutch Church on Staten Island. Cornelia CORSSEN and Hendrick KROESEN had the following children: +100 i. Benjamin and his family lived on Staten Island until 1726, where he was a farmer. His mark for cattle was recorded in Richmond County on Staten Island, Dec. 10, 1722 and can be found in Stillwell's "Historical Miscellany," Vol. 1, p. 32: Benjamin CORSON, his Mark for his cattle and sheep and horses (horses crossed out). A half penny in the under side of the left ear and for his horses branded with letters B.K. upon left Buttick. Benjamin and his family came to Bucks County in 1726, purchasing a farm in Horthampton Township of Jeremiah DUNGAN, a tract of 250 acres for the consideration of 350 pounds. Among his neighbors were many of the Dutch families who had previously migrated from Staten Island. See: "The Pennsylvania Traveler", Vol. 5, May 1969, pp. 10-12. Rebecca GROESBECK was baptized on 23 Jun 1675 in Dutch Reformed Church, New Amsterdam, New Netherland. Witnesses were Jacob Vandergrist and Rebecca Jacobs. Rebecca GROESBECK and John HENDRICKSON had the following children: +109 i. Rebecca HENDRICKSON. 53. Leah GROESBECK was baptized on 11 Feb 1680 in New Amsterdam. She was married to Johannes VAN SANDT (son of Garret Stoffelse VAN SANDT and Lysbeth GERRITS) on 17 Dec 1702. Johannes VAN SANDT was born in Long Island, NY. Johannes was the son of Garret Stoffelse Van Sandt. (See records of First Presbyteriean Church, Phiadelphia.) Leah GROESBECK and Johannes VAN SANDT had the following children: 110 i. She was married to James BIDDLE on 8 Nov 1704. 57. Jacob VANDERGRIFF was born in 1679 in New Amsterdam, New York. He was baptized on 20 Sep 1679. He died in 1753 in New Castle County Delaware. After Jacob's marriage to Sarah, he removed to appoquinimink Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. His will was probated in New Castle, January 16, 1754. Because my Grandmother had been so very close to Grama Colbaugh I had it in the back of my mind that she was my grandmother's mother, however, once I began searching for my family I realized that my Grama Colbaugh who was loved dearly, was my Grandmother's great grandmother.
