CHATTANOOGA 2007 HILL CLIMB

Model A’s started arriving in Chattanooga on Thursday, September 6 from points throughout the country. States represented were TN, AL, SC, NC, GA, FL, VA. OH, IN, and TX. After checking in and receiving our goody bags from our hosts, the Scenic City A’s, we traveled to Coker Tire where we were welcomed by Corky Coker and treated to snacks and a tour of Coker Tire and Honest Charley Speed Shop. Part of the Coker collection of classic cars was on display. Corky Coker expressed his interest in working with the local club towards making future Hill Climbs in Chattanooga bigger and better – it will be interesting to see how this pans out.

On Friday morning all of the Model A’s lined up and we traveled to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum where we could tour a large number of old railroad cars and engines on display. We took a short train ride to the repair and restoration shop where we could watch the engine turned around on a turn table for the return trip.

After the conclusion of the train ride we met under large shade trees and feasted on a picnic of catered BBQ pork and chicken with all the trimmings. One thing Model A folks know how to do is to put away good food.

The day’s events concluded with a trip to the restoration shop and museum of Kayo Erwin which housed his personal collection of rare “muscle cars” and other low production automobiles. This collection is open by “invitation only” and we felt privileged to be greeted by Kayo and to be allowed to see his fabulous collection.

Saturday morning arrived and we started setting up the timing equipment, streets were barricaded, and city police positioned to direct traffic. Our hill was on 6^th street in downtown Chattanooga right beside the courthouse and jail.

All of the Southeast had been in the grips of a severe drought coupled with extremely hot weather all summer long. We were afraid that we were in for a “hot time” but plenty of shade was close by the pit area and we could hunt out a “dark spot” to cool down our bodies. Spectators could lounge under the shade trees and watch the race in relative comfort.

The Chattanooga press was on hand and gave our Hill Climb great coverage in the local paper.

Ron Kelley from Royse City, TX brought his 1928 Roadster Pick Up and barely beat out his daughter, Sarah, to win the S-1 class. Sarah Kelley was Queen of the Hill beating out three other ladies for the crown. That RPCup is so fast it makes one think that Ron has worked some of his magic on the “stock” motor.

Carl Adams from Mooresvlle, NC captured the ST-1 class with his 1931 Pick Up. Gee Carl don’t you know you are supposed to let the ladies win?

Tony Chambers from Walkertown, NC edged out Jim Boggs from N. Charleston, SC with his 1930 Tudor to win the ST-2 class.

Randall Strickland from Lambsburg, VA blew away everyone in the M-1 class with his 1930 Pick Up. Jesse Scott from Pinnacle, NC handily won the M-2 class with his 1931 Town Sedan. Both Randall and Jesse ran the Hill and left immediately to drive to the Glidden Tour.

Dave Keplinger from Jonesborough, TN with his 1931 Victoria was unchallenged in the M-4 class.

This year the biggest competition was with the Speedsters. Eleven (11) Speedsters competed in the SP-1 class. A number of cars ran hard and close but a favorite race for the spectators was the one between Ken Miller and his 17 year old grandson, Seth Sayler. The much lighter grandson won the competition proving again the value of reduced weight. And speaking about weight, “The Sandman” Greg Deal from Morganton, NC put 150 pounds of sand in his Speedster to see if it would improve traction – his best time was when he removed the sand. Johhny Wofford from Eustis, FL easily captured SP-1 class honors.

King of the Hill was a tight race between Johnny Wofford and Cass Casmir from Hammond, IN. Cass brought his 1927 T Speedster and won the T-ST class but lost a close race for King of the Hill to Johnny who successfully defended his crown from last year.

Twenty seven (27) cars challenged the 6^th street hill. Several more were expected but did not show for various reasons.

The Awards Banquet was held on Saturday night aboard the Southern Belle Riverboat. Over 130 Model A folks boarded the boat for a delicious prime rib and shrimp creole dinner. After the awards presentation the boat left the dock for a cruise on the Tennessee River with a band playing music for our listening and dancing pleasure.

The Scenic City A’s were wonderful hosts for this event. David Moore and his club members had everything organized and planned for a very enjoyable time.
