MORGANTON 2009 HILL CLIMB

September 11, 2009

Well……………. Was it too close to Labor Day? Was it too soon after the Chattanooga Hill Climb? Was it the economy? In any case, whatever the reason, we had the lowest turnout ever for a hill climb. With less than half of the usual number of cars we had less competition to soak up the fun available for the weekend. We were small in number but we had twice the fun.

We woke up Friday morning to a beautiful day with absolutely perfect weather to go spin some tires and try to beat your best time against the clock. The high temperature for the day was in the low 70’s with a definite chill in the air while setting up the timing equipment. With only nine cars running everyone had plenty of time to practice and to get the car adjustments honed to perfection.

At 1 p.m. the mayor of Morganton arrived to greet the participants, issue a warm welcome, and an invitation to come back for many more visits. Morganton’s 1917 American LaFrance fire truck blasted up the hill to open the final runs.

Automatic winners were declared in classes S-1, ST-2, ST-3 and M-1. David Moore, Jim Boggs, Jeff Hodge, and Buck Wellborn all took home the grand prize in their respective class. Don’t sit on your laurels too long guys because next time you are going to have some competition.

The most competitive class was SP-1 where four speedsters battled back and forth to see who might take home the gold. Finally Don Higgs from Jacksonville, FL edged out all comers to take home the class prize.

For the longest time we only had one entry in Class SP-2. Dave Hoover had the class championship and King of the Hill tied up and then decided to register his son to also race Evira, “The Mistress of the Hills”. Dave should have left well enough alone as his son Bobby buried his father’s time and sped to be King of the Hill. After Bobby’s run Dave said they found a spark plug wire off – Gee Dave do you mean you were beat with only 3 cylinders???

Friday evening we gathered at the Holiday Inn for a delicious prime rib/chicken dinner and the Awards presentations. Entertainment was provided by a local group led by our host Greg Deal, banjo picker extraordinaire.
