1999 was Online Australia Year

Australia is one of the world's leading users of the internet. The Australian Bureau of Statistics found that more than 1.2 million Australian households have internet access at home (August 1998).

'Nearly 4.2 million adults, or 32% of the total adult population, accessed the Internet in the 12 months to August 1998, and increasing numbers are using the internet for electronic commerce. Internet Names Australia yesterday announced that Australia's .au country code domain was the third largest domain space in the world, while the commercial com.au space is the world's sixth largest commercial domain space.
