She Stood By Me

She Stood By Me
by Bert Armstrong

She raised me right, she raised me well.
She saved me from the flames of  Hell.
Without her love, I could never have fought
The battles I've won for the goals I've sought.
When times got hard and the world was cruel,
She was always beside me in the face of a duel.
"You're tough, you'll live." She'd always say.
But that just carries a heavier meaning today,
As I venture out now on my first great quest,
And everyday is a continual test,
Everytime I am tempted to lie down and rest,
I imagine her saying, "Just give it your best."
She may not know that although we're apart,
She is still with me, right here, in my heart.
Although we now rarely see one another,
I need her most of all now.....
     My sweet loving Mother.

Bert joined the army in 1999 at the age of 17.  This is a poem that he wrote for Momma while in basic at Fort Knox, Kentucky.  He later served overseas in Germany in the 1/4th Cavalry unit.
