"In the spring of '99, I decided it was time to get out on my own, so I left home.  I signed my name on the dotted line. Startin' March 29, for the next two years of my life, I'd be a soldier.  They shipped me off to Germany.  Army life just wasn't for me.  I was 10,000 miles from them old red dirt roads."  This was a few lines from a song that Bert wrote about his life.  And these are some photos of his life in the military.
