The Ethiopian Wolf

Download the Ethiopian Wolf Breed

The Ethiopian Wolf, or Canis simensis, is another cousin to the gray wolf. This species is only found in Ethiopia. It has other common names such as: the Ethiopian red fox, red jackal, Simien fox, and Simien jackal. They range in Ethiopia in the Simien mountains, upland areas of Shewa province, and the Arusi mountains and Balé Mountains National Park in the south. Ethiopian wolves have more in common with the jackals than with true wolves. Their coats is red in color with a black tail and a lighter red color on the legs. The several hundred Ethiopian wolves who live in Balé Mountains National Park are protected, but elsewhere they are hunted for their pelts and also by farmers who claim that they prey on their sheep.
