The Canis rufus, or Red Wolf, is the most endangered canid in the world. The red wolf is smaller than the gray wolf, but larger than a coyote. They have a thin cinnamon red coat. Some biologists believe the red wolf is not a true species, but a hybrid of coyotes and gray wolves. They somewhat resemble a longer-legged coyote. Their original range extender over the southeastern U.S., from central Texas to Florida and from the Gulf of Mexico to southern Missouri and Indiana. In 1973 a breeding program was launched and in 1988 eight red wolves were released in North Carolina. Later others were released south of Knoxville, Tennessee.
