Bill Hare gained his M.A. in philosophy from the University of Leicester in 1968, and his Ph.D. in philosophy of education from the University of Toronto in 1971. From 1970 until 1995, he taught at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, cross-appointed in the School of Education and the Department of Philosophy. He was promoted to Full Professor in Education and Philosophy in 1979. In 1995, following the closure of education programmes at Dalhousie University, he moved to Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax where he is Professor of Education. He was President of the Canadian Philosophy of Education Society from 1984-6, and was Editor of Paideusis: Journal of the Canadian Philosophy of Education Society from 1992 to 1996. In 1995 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Association of Foundations of Education, and in 1999, the Mary Anne Raywid Award from the Society of Professors of Education. His main philosophical interests concern the aims of education, especially open-mindedness and critical thinking, the nature of good teaching, and the educational ideas of Bertrand Russell.
