Carol Singing 2006

By Laura Double (Bubble)

Williton YFC took part in their annual carol singing to raise money for the Williton First Response Unit. We did our usual 3 nights just before Christmas and once again received a lot of support from local farmers and families.  In total we raised £1300 which is going to go towards buying much needed equipment. There was a presentation on March 9th 2007 with a demonstration from the first response unit showing our members the kinds of things that they can do.

National Mixed Hockey Finals

By Laura Double (Bubble)

It has been 6 months since the area round of mixed hockey but it has flown by. We all travelled up to Coventry to represent Somerset in the National Finals on 8th October 2006.  Everyone was very nervous but the team spirit was high and with excellent leadership from our two captains Nick Bennett and Sarah Baker they lead us to win our league.  We then moved into the semi-finals and the nerves were increasing but we were playing to such a high standard and everyone was giving it their all.  We couldn’t believe it as we won our semi-final and were looking at a place in the national final, something which our club hasn’t seen before.  Although our club played fantastically and the moral stayed high we missed out on winning the title but we came a respectful second.  I cannot say how proud I was to be a part of our club that day as we were the only team there that was made up of only one club and we have given Williton YFC a name on a National scale.  As we start a new YFC year lets hope this one is as successful, if not more than the previous.

Williton Annual Ball (Minehead Rugby Club)

By Jos Bennett

The 21st of July 2006 saw Williton young farmers booking out Minehead Rugby Club for our annual ball. The theme ‘Mission Possible’, the dress code Black and White – no jeans, trainers or guns, the entertainments were ‘Small Mercies’ and a local DJ.

A massive thank you should be given to the organisers of the evening especially Sarah Baker for the time she donated to making it a successful evening. As far as I have heard everyone had a good time and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

West Group Rally Report

By Laura Double (Bubble)

This year it was held at Sally Taylors Farm Hosted by Cutcombe. Unfortunately not many of our members were able to attend but I think this was the best rally I've been to. The quiz's were challenging and the handicrafts were again to a very high standard. We had quite a few entries from people that weren't there but someone else brought them (well done Kerry ) The main events were wicked and the gorgeous day made it even more enjoyable( no shaking due to the cold) I went home at the end of the day covered in egg, flower, water and washing up liquid. Nothing compared to Geoff though ( he looked like a walking dough ball) That's the end of the rally's for this year only a few more Young Farmer events to go :-(

County Rally Report

By Laura Double (Bubble)

This year's county rally wasn't far away this year which made a difference. I thought it was very well organised which is good cos some of our lot aren't!! There were many activities going on in the theme of the rally which was "In Space", including space hopping and moon waling to name a few. Our club did very well, including some individual group wins including the efficiency and safety which James, Pete, Steve and Skid completes and won. Us girls won the X-Factor which we really enjoyed, Verity, Baker, Annabel, Kelly and me (Bubble), we were shaking our booty to Crazy Chick!! Stock judging went well and the moon buggy racing was interesting and scary!! ( I was driving it) Handicrafts were to a very high standard and it was good to see Williton on the certificates. We can 3rd overall in the 30 members and under cup ( I think) which is amazing.   The evening do was good although I thought too expensive for what it was!! but I think everyone had a great time, roll on 2008 when West Group will be holding the County Rally!

Hockey Report

By Jos Bennett

To continue Williton’s successful year in competitions, Nick and Sarah our sports secretaries have lead us to Nationals which will be taking place in October. The first step on the ladder to Nationals was to take on the fearless Exmoor at Minehead, this was one of the more interesting fixtures of the season so far and a good game was played. Winning this game sent us through to the Somerset rounds played at Shepton Mallet, congratulations to Cotty for staying awake just in case someone did have a shot. By winning all games in this tournament we carried on to South West round.

The South West round was played at Weston-super-Mare the same weekend as the panto. This wasn’t as successful as the previous round but never the less we came second on the day and will be heading off to Warwickshire for the Nationals. Congratulations to all that played and good luck for the final round.

Pantomime Report

By Laura Double (Bubble)

When we all decided we were going to take part in the panto competition, I don’t think any of us realised just how far we would go. We starting organising it before Christmas, which seems like a lifetime ago. Parts were dished out and we started learning lines. The west group round came up very quickly in February and although people were panicking to start with, we pulled it off on the night and won!!

The next round took us to Weston Super Mare in the beginning of March. After some changing to the scenery which both Cotty and Keith had done a fantastic job. off we went. The stage was massive and the nerves were building but everyone displayed a flawless performance and again, we won. Steve Hawkins getting best actor, quite right too.

The next round was at the same venue and we all enjoyed it very much. We came fourth, which was disappointing at the time, but considering that our club had never got that far before, it was a huge achievement. Kelly Matravers did us proud and won best actress.

The whole thing was amazing to be part of and I would encourage everyone to get involved and have a go.

Chew Valley YFC Snowball Report

By Emmer Umfreville

So, yet again we made the trip up the M5 to the Webbington Hotel for the Snowball.  Well done to the people who managed to restrain Lucy form climbing into the chocolate fountain.  Entertainment was provided by all who had a go on the greasy pole, bucking bronco and the bungie run.  People drank, gambled and danced their way through a very entertaining night!

Carol Singing 2005 Report

By Jos Bennett

This year’s carol singing was my first at the club and I was very impressed with what I witnessed. All three nights saw a reasonable turn out by the club, every night two groups were sent out to fill Williton area with Christmas joy. Funds this year will be sent to St Johns Ambulance Service in Minehead who are raising money for a new 4 x 4 ambulance. I believe that this year we have managed to exceed the funds of last year’s efforts even without a solo from Keith.  The grand total was £1,150.

At this point I would like to thank Kerry and Vicki for arranging the carol singing and sending out the letters. I would also like to thank all our hosts for their hospitality and generous donations.

Last of all I would like to apologise for my own efforts at singing Christmas carols but as I like to say it is ‘the thought that counts’.

Blue Anchor to Minehead Raft Race
