Hi!
Welcome to a small collection of pictures from today, May 9, 2011, when June and I, together with my dad and my brother Ralph made a short visit to Charleston. As before in 2002, we took a carriage ride through the town. We had a very interesting guide, but a lot of these pictures will have pretty scanty labels because I certainly cannot remember all the names of the houses or their occupants.
House with earthquake pole caps
After a serious earthquake, the buildings were restored by driving long steel shafts between the walls. They connected to the walls with turn buckles. Each day, the occupant would twist them one round, thereby pulling the walls together. After a year or so, the job was done, and the places where the rods were inserted were covered up by metal disks.
