(02/13/2003)Ah, lake Joanis, my home. Lake Joanis is like a doughnut, with a island in the middle. I have now fished the lake for all 4 of my years at UWSP. Here's the skinny on Joanis. If your after good sized gills go somewhere else cause there not here in good number. The predatory species are mostly small, with some absolute monsters of each species in there. The most useful aspect of Joanis is wintertime crappies. You can usually go out and catch yourself a meal pretty easily- sometimes. Night fishing tends to work best for them later on in the season. If you do get on the crappies there, keep within reason, their population is not inexhaustable.
