School Safety Plan:

Woodmere Elementary was the first school in Jefferson Parish to develop a safety/emergency plan in conjunction with various community agencies (ie: police, fire station, local churches, etc.) and has a video presentation of the plan available for viewing entiltled, "Hostages In Our Schools".

Jump Rope for Heart:

Woodmere Elementary School has repeatedly been recognized by the American Heart Association for its outstanding participation in the Jump Rope For Heart Progam. For the past nine years, Woodmere has been listed as a "Top Turner" in the state of Louisiana for the amount of money it has raised to benefit the heart association. Many years that amount of money has been in excess of ten thousand dollars. Teacher, Neva Shillington, coordinates this progam, and the students and parents of Woodmere are always motivated to participate.

Excellence in Teaching:

Our teaching staff has also received several awards for outstanding professional qualities. One teacher is a Jefferson Parish Teacher of the Year for Elementary Schools. Another teacher has twice received the Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Award for Elementary Education in Jefferson Parish. A third teacher has received the LASIP training.

Academic Games, Social Studies Fair, &

Young Authors Contest

Our Woodmere students have also performed well in Academic Games over the years. In the 1998/99 school year, our team placed second in the parish in the Social Studies Academic Games with several students receiving individual first and second place standings in various categories.

At Woodmere it is mandatory for students in fourth and fifth grade to complete a social studies project. Each year many of our students win at the regional social studies fair and go on to the state competition in Baton Rouge. This includes our special education students who are also required to participate in the school and regional fairs.

Woodmere students are also winners each year at both the regional and state competitions for the Young Authors Contest including both regular and special education students.
