Conservation Science Department
WWF Indonesia-Sahul Bioregion
WWF Indonesia, who has almost 20 years working in the Irian Jaya (recently known as Papua) region, established the Conservation Science Department under the Sahul Bioregion Program to improved understanding of the scientific basis of conservation and sustainable management. To address the goal, the department collect ecological information necessary for planning, management and policy work through:
Rapid biological surveys at both inside and outside protected areas,
Ecological monitoring at selected sites,
Studies of the spatial requirements of selected threatened species,
Applied ecological studies focused on specific problems, such as development impacts on ecosystem processes, or the impact of introduced species on native competitors, and
A small grants program to students and local NGOs to magnify our impact.
