 International Dragon & Lion Dance Association Rules
(correct as of April 2001).
1.Number of Participants: Each lion dance troupe should comprise of 1 leader, 1 coach and a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 8 performers. Failure in observing this rule will result in marks being deducted.
 
2.Classification: Southern lion, Cheng picking with props.
 
3.Prop Regulations:
a) Height: the highest pillar must not exceed 3 meters in height and not less than 2 meters.
b) Length: Not more than 15 meters and less than 10 meters in length (to be measured in a straight line). If the prop is in a Z shape, the length is measured in a Z shape respectively. Marks will be deducted if props exceed the set limit.
c) The diameter of the plate on top of the pillar must not exceed 0.38 meters.
    Marks will be deducted if the plate exceeds the limit. 
 
4.Competition Time Limit: Not less than 10 minutes and not more than 15 minutes.
If time exceeds or is less than limits, marks will be deducted.
Setting up the props & decorations must not exceed 15 minutes
 
5.Content of Competition:
Free form to display the lion's expression of being happy, sad, angry, frightened, suspicious, sleepy, drunk, etc. To include "Cheng picking pattern", contestants may choose style and method as long as it involves using the lion's mouth to pick the cheng. Failure in observing this rule will result in marks being deducted.

7.Deduction of Marks:

In the event the performing team falls
and cannot complete the performance.

No score will be given.

If any part of the costume or
accessories
(belt, arm,wrist/headband, scarf,
any decorative props, etc) fall
off the performing team during
the performance.

0.1 mark will be deducted.

8.Judging:
a) The panel consists of 9 judges. Two judges with the highest mark and lowest mark will be omitted. The marks will be taken and averaged from the remaining 5 judges.

b) The total scored marks minus the total deducted and divided by 5 will be the net marks. The top net marks will be the winner.                

c) If there are 2 teams having the same net marks for the first time, then the average of the 9 judges marks is to be calculated. And if the marks are still the same then the number of class C difficulty techniques is to be calculated, the team with the most will be the winner. If the marks are still the same, then the 2 teams will take the same place.

d) In the event of a performing team falling down and unable to complete the performance, no marks will be awarded.

e) If any of the lion dancers are injured and the continuation of the performance will be dangerous, the organizing committee has the discretion to terminate the performance.

f) After each performance, judges are required to show the audience the marks awarded to the team.

g) If there is any disagreement, the chief judge has the right to call upon all the judges for a meeting until a mutual agreement is achieved.

h) The judges decision will be final.

9.Accuracy of Judging:

1. SHAPING OF LION :
All parts working and present. 
Dress : Teams appearance and presentation.
Manners : Teams to conduct themselves appropriately. 
Prop design : Props to fit story being told.
Title :  The title should match and describe the performance.

2. FOOTWORK :
Teams should show a variety of footwork and can come
up with their own styles & names, but will be judged on
the 8 basic footwork : Horse stance, Bow stance, T-step,
Empty step, Smash step, Lift step, Kneel step,
Reclining step.
Coordination : Head and tail well coordinated.

3. HARMONY :
The lion must be in unison with the music.  
The beat of the drum, cymbal and gong must be clear,
light, heavy, fast and slow etc.

4. EXPRESSION :
The lion's expression of being happy, angry, sad, excited, 
nervous, calm, scared, cautious, drunk, sleepy, etc

5. DIFFICULTY :                           
The difficult moves will be submitted before the
performance to Assess a difficulty rating. Each
movement must be perfectly executed in the routine
to gain the maximummarks.

10.Deduction of Marks in Detail:

c) Any musical instrument dropped or damaged
d) Prop falls or breaks whilst dancers are performing.

4) Minor Fault 
a) Costume or decoration falls.
b) Head slide but still remain on legs.
c) When jumping the head or tail is unstable and is
unbalanced or oversteps.
d) While entering & leaving the competition area,
participants co-ordination & politeness is not proper.
e) Head & tail clash/bang into each other.

5.Time Limit Deduction (deduction from deserved
marks by the Chief Judge):
a) If performance time is less than 10 minutes:
deduct 1 mark
b) If performance time exceeds 15 minutes:
deduct 1 mark
c) If performance time is less than 7 minutes,
the team will be disqualified
d) If performance time exceeds 17 minutes,
the team will be disqualified

Judging for Difficulty
a) If the same designated move is repeated then only the best attempt will acquire marks.
b) If undesignated move is performed continuously without any mistake will acquire full marks.
c) If there's a slight mistake then it will not gain full marks.

A = 0.1                B = 0.2                 C = 0.3

APPENDIX: Things that participants should know:
1) Participants must perform according to the organizers rules & regulations, Participants are required to attend all ceremonies

2) Teams are allowed one troupe flag and one national or regional flag. A maximum of two flags are allowed during performance
 
3) The props used by the participants are not allowed to have advertisements or any form of written message posted. The organizers reserve the right to disqualify the contestants if this is not observed.

4) Rules & regulations are to be followed in order to express united sportsmanship and to maintain a good reputation among the regions and representatives. There should be no commotion or shouting, erratic behavior or rude comments during the competition.
 
5) All teams must register 30 minutes before the competition starts. Teams will be called 3 times if after the 3rd call the team does not come this will be considered a forfeit.

6) Participants who don*t show up three minutes after being called to perform will be disqualified
 
7) Timing will be calculated from the first drumbeat and will end when lion head & tail take off costume

8) The time limit for each performance is limited to a maximum of 15 minutes. If it exceeds the time limit, a warning signal will be given and participants must pay a salute and leave the venue.
 
9) During the performance, no third party is allowed to change with any lion dancer.

10) The performance cannot be stopped without prior permission from the organizing committee.
 
11) Participants shall be responsible for any injury upon themselves during the competition.

12) Participants who disrupt or create disturbances during the competition will have to pay for any damages and assume the necessary legal responsibilities.
