Traditional Rules
The International Dragon & Lion Dance Association (IDLDF) has recently come out with the rules for traditional lion
dance competition. Malaysia will be holding its first National Traditional Competition using the rules in May. The
competition involves a single lion performing traditional cheng (green) picking, chosen by the competitor. The
basic structure of the traditional competition is similar to the pole jumping lion dance. The major modifications
are:
|
Judging Criteria |
Pts |
1) Lion costume, musician costume, etiquette & prop design |
1 |
2) Comformity to tradition rule(for selected performance title) |
1 |
3) Foot work & stance, lion head & tail coordination |
2 |
4) Lion movement & music harmony |
2 |
5) Skill difficulity |
1 |
6) Form of lion |
3 |
As for points deduction an extra catergory is added: 1) Deviation from title content
(-0.5) (ie: jumping straight
down from the 'high ground' when doing a cheng involving 'cliffs', jumping off the wrong side of the 'bridge' etc)
There
are also other minor modifications. Hopefully this will make lion dance competition more accessible to all teams around
the World, & a World Championships will follow in the not too distant future. George Chan-NZ
