Here in Arizona I was working closely with libertarians during the '92 campaign but needed to maintain my independent ballot status for the lawsuit to continue. I ran as an independent in '92 nd was in the press a great deal and very libertarian on the issues of course. A man named ??? Drew registered as a Libertarian and then got his wife's and his signature on the petition to qualify (or ran as a write in with only two votes required - can't remember which) and soundly kicked the crap out of me with stances that were truly socialist. He ws just looking for an easy way on the ballot and the previous elections cost him too much effort as a Democrat.
In 1998 when I ran as a Libertarian for a congressional seat there was an independent that had a lot of backing from teachers (he was a teacher in Scottsdale I think). He ran a very visable campaign and was sure that he was going to kick the shit out of me. At the newspaper editorial board I relayed my experience on the party label issue and that I expected that he would do half of what I would. He was crazed. After the election he tried to get me to side with him in a protest of how the elections are held etc.
Lesson learned? The automatic votes are either programed in the computers or in the heads of people.
