SMITH CAMPAIGN BEGINS ADVERTISING, EXPANDS OUTREACH
Nearly three years remain before the Libertarian Party will choose its 2004 presidential nominee, but one campaign isn't waiting.
The Ad Hoc Conspiracy to Draft L. Neil Smith is working to place copies of its "campaign book" -- _Lever Action_, the libertarian science fiction author's first print collection of political essays - -- in public libraries across the nation. As of today, copies have been donated to libraries in 12 states: Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Oregon, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Nebraska, Hawaii, Alaska and Washington.
Book placement is the campaign's first priority, accounting for about $300 of the $400 raised and spent so far. The campaign is now moving to increase its donor base, with a goal of one thousand placed books by the end of 2001. It has purchased banner ad exposures on popular freedom-oriented web site SierraTimes.Com (operated by former LP Senate candidate J.J. Johnson and former LP vice presidential candidate Nancy Lord Johnson), as well as its first LP News ad, which will be seen by 37,000 LP members and subscribers in October.
An article about the campaign will appear in the September issue of LP News.
The "un-candidate" (Smith has agreed to accept the LP nomination if his supporters can mount a successful campaign, but is not actively seeking it himself) has also been busy:
* _Lever Action _ was released earlier this year.
* _Hope_, a novel about a libertarian presidency, co-authored by Aaron Zelman of Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, was released last month.
* _The American Zone_, Smith's newest science fiction work, will be released in December.
* Smith began a regular column for Sierra Times earlier this month.
* Smith appeared on the Mark Williams show on San Francisco's KFBK (AM 1530), on August 17th to discuss "A Blueprint for Ending Gun Control" an article he recently wrote with Zelman.
The campaign web site is located at www.smith2004.org.
