[Please do not forget the "Complain to McCain" Rallys tomorrow in Tempe, Tucson and Yuma! starting at 10 A.M.]

The following may be used, retransmitted, copied, etc. as long as appropriate credit is given to the Firearms Action Committee of Tucson for their effort in putting together the following list of "McCain FACTS"

McCain FACTS

* "At the same time, constitutional rights must not be taken away without proper notice and a meaningful opportunity to be heard." This statement was made by Senator McCain in a letter to a constituent.

Excuse me Senator, but constitutionally guaranteed rights are NOT NEGOTIABLE!

* Since 1995, Senator McCain has only voted with gun owners 42% of the time, earning him a C rating from Gun Owners of America, a ntional right to self defense advocacy organization.

* Senator McCain introduced anti-gun show bill, S.890, aligning himself with anti-self defense Democrats. This bill goes as far as to require gun show promoters to make all those who attend the show to sign a statement that they have been made aware of the requirement that a government mandated background check is necessary to transfer a firearm, even if it is your gun and it's a private transaction!

* Senator McCain introduced and voted for his "Inumbent Protection/Anti-free Speech Act," S.27, commonly referred to as campaign finance reform. This bill limits the free speech of organizations such as F.A.C.T. to inform its membership where a politician running for office stands on their right to self-defense sixty (60) days prior to election day. He has admitted there are provisions in his bill which are unconstitutional and will more than likely be challenged in court. Then why are they in your bill Senator McCain? What's the Constitution among friends?

* Senator McCain starred in an anti-self defense commercial paid for by Americans for Gun Safety and financed by Andrew McKelvey (Monster.com). McKelvey was a member of the board of Handgun Control, Inc.. He left HCI because he felt they had become ineffective and weren't doing enough to forward the anti- gun agenda.

Sean Hammond, spokesman of Citizens of Arizona to Prevent Gun Violence, which is an affiliated group of Americans for Gun Safety, stated in a letter to the editor of a Tucson newspaper that the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution, "has nothing to do whatsoever with personal use of firearms." CAP Gun Violence has called for things such as mandatory trigger locks, mandatory waiting periods, limitations on the number of firearms one may buy in a month, etc.

* In a question referencing his starring in this anti-self defense commercial, Senator McCain stated, "I do believe my view has evolved." Why has McCain's view on guns changed? Because bad people committed bad crimes with guns. What about law abiding Citizens Senator?

* In a May 1999 interview by Jake Tapper of Salon News, Senator McCain said when asked what he would do if he were president in the aftermath of the Columbine shootings, "It's obvious that at a gun show, people should be subject to background checks. I don't get it why in stores you get a background check, but you go three blocks down, there's no background check."

The Senator should not speak on what he obviously knows so little about. Excuse me Senator, but bacground checks ARE conducted at gun shows!

* When the U.S. Forest Service shut down the Tucson Rod and Gun Club, the club asked for Senator McCain's help. Did they get it? No. In fact, when Ken Rineer, President of the Firearms Action Committee of Tucson asked Senator McCain on the John C. Scott Show why he refused to help the shooters of Tucson and the Tucson Rod and Gun Club, he "blew up" and threw his headsets off. Obviously, the Senator did not answer the question. Why has he not helped?

* SenatorMcCain came down hard on tobacco companies by voting to advance a bill adding $1.10 per pack tax to a pack of cigarettes. Yet when similar bills come up on alcohol, the Senator passes and doesn't vote. I wonder if this inconsistency has anything to do with his intimate relationship with a brewery?

* Those who know Senator McCain know about the difficulty he has controlling his temper. Is a Senator who has been described as having a "volcanic temper and who often insults people during his fits of rage, fit to govern?

* As some already found out, don't ever cross Senator McCain. If you do, you could have hell to pay. An example of the "wrath of McCain" is when Senator McCain refused to talk to anybody from the Arizona Republic for a year because they published an editorial about a scandal involving his wife Cindy. The scandal? Cindy stole painkillers from a charity she founded.

Another example of Senator McCain's mean-spiritedness is when the Senator had it out with then MaricopaCounty Superintendent of Schools, Sandra Dowling, at a cocktail party some years ago. McCain told Dowling that she, "was going to suffer the political wrath," if she didn't drop her support for Barbara Barrett. Barrett was running for the GOP nomination for Governor against Fife Symington.

* In another article by Jake Tapper of Salon News, Tapper discusses the media's "love affair" with Senator McCain and the Senator's "love affair" with the media. Tapper said, "Media is important to John McCain as heis to us. He loves the limelight, for one, but more importantly, its an important element of his battle plan as he tries to emerge as a serious contender for the GOP nomination."

So, is John McCain merely pandering to the media to get what he wants? Think about this for a moment, if John McCain is so loved by the mainstream media, and we are at odds with the mainstream media on most issues, should we embrace Senator McCain as they have or should we be very cautious of him? After all, most of what the mainsream media is for, I'm against.

* During his campaign for president, Senator McCain promised to support tax cuts for working Americans at a New Hampshire speech. He voted against President Bush's tax cut plan. Did he lie in New Hampshire or did he just want to "get even" with President Bush?

* Last but not least, remember the "Keating Five?" Old news maybe, but still news.

Sincerely,

Ken Rineer President, FACT
