Octogenarians on the list, and maybe a few others, might remember December 5, 1933, the day that federal Alcohol Prohibition of alcohol in the United States was repealed and alcohol policy returned to the purview of states, counties and municipalities. Prohibition ended a little after 5:00pm EST, when Utah became the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment to the Constitution. Repeal of Alcohol Prohibition heralded a dramatic drop in the homicide rate, which was ultimately erased, unfortunately, by escalating enforcement of drug prohibition.
The Associated Press web site has highlighted this 68th anniversary of the re-legalization of alcohol with an audio recording of a speech by a leading prohibitionist, the Rev. Billy Sunday, condemning the ratification:
