Michael Schumacher makes an impressive start to the campaign, in a race overshadowed by the death of a track marshall.

Schumacher makes a great start, taking the lead in his Ferrari, while teammate Rubens Barrichello makes minor contact, sliding back in the field. Schumacher is able to dominate as Mika Hakkinen's Mclaren retires with suspension problem, leading a 1-3 finish by Ferrari, with David Coulthard's Mclaren splitting the pair for 2nd place.

A crash in the 5th lap takes the life of a track marshall, casting a pall over the race.
