Race Notes

Bad weather, timing shine on Buddy Rice, making him the winner in a rain-shortened race.

Rice takes over the lead when leaders Tony Kanaan, Bryan Herta and Adrian Fernandez all pit just ahead of a thunderstorm that brings a premature end, 20 laps short of the 500-mile mark. A long weather delay left the field competiting with a shortened window. But it was the fuel windows that settled the outcome.

Rice started his Rahal Letterman Racing car on the poll, and proved to be the top car for much of the race, leading 91 of the 180 laps. Kanaan, Dan Weldon and Herta followed in Andretti Green Racing team cars, as Honda-powered vehicles take the top 7 spots.
