Hurricanes put up a good effort while dealing with the grief from teammate Bryan Pata's death, but effort doesn't equal results in a 14-13 loss to the Terps.

Miami holds Maryland to just 6 first downs, yet still manages to lose after giving up 2 huge plays for TDs and committing a pair of costly turnovers. The Terps put the Canes down 14-0 as Darius Heyward-Bey scores on a 65-yard TD reception from Sam Hollenbach on Maryland's 2nd play. Then the duo starts the 2nd quarter with a 96-yard TD pass.

Miami cuts it to 14-10 before halftime on the strength of a TD pass from Kirby Freeman. But despite converting 13-of-21 3rd downs and controlling the ball for over 37 minutes the Hurricanes can scratch out points.

Heyward-Bey catches 5 for 175 yards, accounting for all but 83 of Maryland's yards.
