Game Notes

#3 Hurricanes leave Bobby Bowden, #4 Seminoles dazed and confused after a 26-25 rally.

FSU dominates through most of 3 quarters, leading 19-3 after extending a 7-point halftime lead on a TD by Alphonso Williams following a blocked punt and a FG by Derek Schmidt. However, the Noles are riddled with critical mistakes despite the lead, blowing a FG attempt in the 1st quarter due to a bad snap, that sets up Miami for a FG instead. The Noles miss a FG attempt in the 1st half, and a PAT in the 3rd quarter. Then FSU adds 2 huge mistakes in the 4th quarter as Schmidt misses a 31-yard FG with the score tied 19-19, and Danny McManus fumbles a snap deep in Miami territory that preceeds Miami's go-ahead TD.

Following McManus' fumble, Steve Walsh throws a 73-yard TD pass putting the Canes ahead 26-19 w/ 2:32 remaining. It was Walsh's 3rd TD pass of the 2nd half after struggling early. Walsh's 49-yard TD pass to Melvin Bratton w/ :57 left in the 3rd quarter pulls Miami to within 19-11. Danny Stubbs then picks McManus on the next possession, setting up Walsh's 2nd TD pass, followed by a 2-point conversion pass to Warren Williams that tied it 19-19.

Florida State is able to ride Sammie Smith's running for most of the game. Smith gains 189 yards. However, its mistakes that haunt the Noles. After McManus hits Ron Lewis w/ an 18-yard TD pass with :42 left in the game, Bowden decides to go for 2 points and the win after the earlier special teams mistakes and misses. McManus' pass for the conversion is knocked down by Bubba McDowell.

Walsh finishes 13-of-29 for 254 yards and 3 TDs, while McManus goes 16-of-24 for 201 yards and 1 INT. FSU loses despite an overwhelming time-of-possession edge of 40:32 to 19:28.
