Game Notes

#2 Hurricanes abuse the #10 Cougars 40-10.

John Jenkins talks a big game, but Miami does all the playing. The Hurricanes sack David Klingler 6 times, and hold Houston's attack to 71 yards passing in the first half while opening a 30-3 lead. Klingler finishes 32-of-59 for 219 yards and 1 TD pass in the final minute.

Meanwhile, Gino Torretta is the one lighting up the defense and scoreboard. Torretta goes 16-of-35 for 365 yards and 4 TDs. Torretta hits Lamar Thomas for a 2-yard TD pass on a fade, for a 14-0 lead with 2:48 left in the 1st quarter. Then follows with a 33-yard TD pass to Kevin Williams w/ 13:30 left in the 2nd quarter.

After Houston gets on the board with a 25-yard FG by Roman Anderson, the Canes stick the dagger in, answering with a 71-yard TD pass from Torretta to Thomas w/ 3:18 left in the half. Miami follows it with a safety on a bad punt snap for a 30-3 lead. The Canes put the game away when Williams takes a short pass for a 51-yard TD on the 1st series of the 2nd half.

All that remains is for the officials to drag out the rest of the game as they keep up a steady stream of flying flags, allowing for a 4-plus hour marathon thanks in large part to 31 penalties and 314 yards in penalties.
