#2 Seminoles finally deliver the winning kick for Bobby Bowden, nipping #1 Cornhuskers 18-16 on Scott Bentley's 22-yard FG w/ :21.

Nebraska had gone ahead on Byron Bennett's 27-yard FG w/ 1:16 remaining before Heisman winner Charlie Ward directed the winning drive. However, Bowden could not celebrate his 1st National Championship until Bennett misses for 45 yards on the final play.

It was the happy ending to a night of frustration for Florida State as Ward throws for 286 yards but the Noles can only find the end zone once, when William Floyd scores on a 1-yard run providing a 12-7 lead early in the 3rd quarter. The 3rd of Bentley's 4 FGs extends the lead to 15-7. However, Tommie Frazier is able to rally Nebraska in the 4th quarter forcing the climatic ending.
