Game Notes

Oilers blitz the Bears with big plays in a 47-0 rout.

Chicago starts with good luck, opening with a big kick return, and getting a fumble deep in Houston territory, and converting a fake punt. However, the Bears have nothing to show except a missed FG.

Houston goes up 3-0 on a 29-yard FG by Toni Fritsch late in the 1st quarter. From then on the flood gates open. Dan Pastorini goes 12-of-19 for 250 yards and 2 TDs, and the 1st TD comes on an 85-yard TD pass to Ken Burrough. The next big play follows when Billy "White Shoes" Johnson takes a reverse 61 yards for a TD and 17-0 lead.

After a simple 1-yard TD run by Don Hardeman starts the 3rd quarter, Pastorini hits Burrough on a 44-yard TD. Burrough catches 6 passes for an Oiler-record 180 yards.

The big plays continue in the 4th quarter when Gregg Bingham scoops up a fumble and returns it 33 yards for a score. After James Young sacks Mike Phipps in the end zone for a safety, Johnson returns the ensuing free kick 75 yards for the final score.

Walter Payton rushes for 73 yards on 17 carries before sitting out when the game becomes a blowout. The Bears' lone good news is that the blowout preceeds a 6-game winning streak.
