Games Notes

Oilers beat in the Dolphins 35-30 on Earl Campbell's classic MNF night.

Campbell rushes for 199 yards and 4 TDs, including the back-breaking 81-yard jaunt late in the game that seals Houston's victory. Leading 28-23, attempting to run out the clock, Campbell eludes a defender in the backfield that sprints away from Miami defenders down the sideline for the clinching score w/ 1:11 left in the game. Campbell had given the Oilers the lead moments earlier, scoring on a 4-yard run w/ 4:46 remaining.

It capped a back-and-forth fight as Bob Griese lights it up for the Dolphins. Griese goes 23-of-32 for 350 yards and 2 TDs. Miami had erased a 21-14 deficit as Leroy Harris scores on a 1-yard run, and then A.J. Duhe sacks Dan Pastorini for a safety and 23-21 lead.

Throughout the contest, the teams traded punches as Griese's 13-yard strike to Nat Moore caps the opening drive with a TD, but Campbell answers with a 1-yard TD run followed by Pastorini's 15-yard TD pass to Mike Barber. Delvin Williams drew the Dolphins even with a 1-yard TD run w/ :21 left in the 1st half. Campbell regained Houston's lead with a 5-yard TD run in the 3rd quarter.
