Game Notes

Oilers have more kick than the Dolphins in a 9-6 win on MNF.

Toni Fritsch nails 3 of 4 FG attempts, doing one better than Miami's Uwe von Schamman. Fritsch gives Houston a 9-3 lead with a 46-yard FG and 39-yard FG in the 3rd quarter after the teams play to a 3-3 draw in the 1st half. von Schamman pulls the Dolphins within 9-6 with a 51-yard FG in the 4th quarter.

However, the Oilers' defense holds off the Dolphins. Miami's final 3 possessions all end in turnovers. After Miami takes over at Houston's 31, Vernon Perry denies the thread with an INT in the end zone. Robert Brazile recovers Gary Davis' fumble after Miami reaches the Oilers' 49 on the next series, and the final threat is turned back after Gregg Bingham steps in front of a Griese pass after the Dolphins move inside the Oilers' 25 in the final minutes.

Houston is able to run out the clock behind Earl Campbell, who becomes the 1st opposing back to go over 100 yards against Miami's defense in '79, carrying 32 times for 119 yards.
