Games Notes

Chargers survive the Drama in Miami with a 41-38 win over the Dolphins in OT.

After the teams combine to fail on 3 FG attempts to win the game, Rolf Benirschke hits a 29-yard FG 13:52 into overtime. Benirschke had missed a 27-yard FG attempt earlier in OT. But San Diego stays alive, first when Kellen Winslow blocks Uwe von Schamann's FG attempt on the final play of regulation, and then Leroy Jones blocks another attempt from 35 yards immediately prior to the Chargers' winning drive.

The stops are a stark contrast to a game when offenses rule. San Diego jumps out to a 24-0 lead highlighted by Wes Chandler's 56-yard punt return for a score. However, Miami rallies in the 2nd quarter, closing to within 24-17 before halftime when Don Strock hits Duriel Harris with a 15-yard pass, and Harris then laterals to Tony Nathan who takes it 25 yards for the score. Miami ties it when Strock hits Joe Rose with their 2nd TD connection of the game.

The Chargers recover to regain the lead on Dan Fouts' 25-yard TD pass to Winslow. Miami ties it 31-31 when Strock hits Bruce Hardy who splits the defense for a 50-yard TD, and then Nathan's 12-yard TD run on the opening play of the 4th quarter, finally puts the Dolphins in front.

Miami appears in position to put the game away, driving deep into San Diego territory late in the game before Andra Franklin fumbles. The Chargers drive back with Fouts hitting James Brooks on a 9-yard TD pass to tie it w/ :58 left in the game. But Miami's not without a final chance, but it fails when Winslow blocks von Schamann's FG attempt.

Winslow catches a playoff-record 13 passes for 166 yards, while Charlie Joiner has 108 yards receiving, and Chandler adds 106 yards. Chuck Muncie rushes for 120 yards. Fouts orchestrates it, hitting 33-of-53 for 433 yards and 3 TDs.

Strock hits 29-of-43 for 403 yards and 4 TDs after replacing an ineffective David Woodley. Nathan has 48 yards rushing, and 9 catches for 114 yards.
