Games Notes
Redskins overtake the Dolphins to win 27-17.
Miami leads 17-10 at the half and 17-13 heading into the 4th quarter, but Washington keeps coming, finally taking the lead when John Riggins breaks free from a tackle attempt by Don McNeal on a 4th-and-1 play and turns it into a 43-yard TD. Riggins sets Super Bowl records with 38 carries and 166 yards.
The Redskins tack on an insurance TD when Joe Theismann hits Charlie Brown with a 6-yard TD pass late in the game.
In the end, its Washington's power offense that overcomes Miami's big plays. The Dolphins sputter on offense, gaining just 176 total yards and David Woodley is an embarrassing 4-of-14 for 97 yards. But he does make one of the completions count, hitting Jimmy Cefalo on a 76-yard TD pass to open the scoring in the 1st quarter.
Washington draws even at 10-10 when Theismann hits Alvin Garrett with a 4-yard TD pass in the 2nd quarter, but the Dolphins answer immediately when Fulton Walker returns the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a score.
