Game Notes

Adam Vinatieri kicks the Patriots to another dramatic championship win, hitting a 41-yard FG w/ :04 left to lift New England over the Panthers 32-29.

Vinatieri, who kicked the game winner in Super Bowl XXXVI, repeats the feat, capping a wild 4th quarter that resulted in 3 scores by each team.

After staying scoreless until the final minutes of the 1st half when an offensive outburst results in a 14-10 New England lead at the half, the teams fail to dent the scoreboard in the 3rd quarter.

After Antowain Smith's 2-yard TD run gives the Patriots a 21-10 lead at the start of the final quarter, Carolina answers with a 33-yard TD run by DeShaun Foster and a Super Bowl-record 85-yard TD pass from Jake Delhomme to Mushin Muhammad for a 22-21 lead.

New England regains the lead when Tom Brady tosses a 1-yard TD pass to Mike Vrabel, but the Panthers have an answer, scoring on the ensuing possession when Delhomme finds Ricky Proehl for a 12-yard TD pass w/ 1:08 left in the game to tie it 29-29.

Brady claims MVP honors for the 2nd time, going 32-of-48 for 354 yards and 3 TDs with 1 INT, as Deion Branch catches 10 passes for 143 yards and 1 TD. Delhomme counters going 16-of-33 for 323 yards and 3 TDs, overcoming a 1-of-9 start.
