If you’re like me (and I hope you aren’t since I’d never wish THAT on anyone) then you’re sick of waiting for some toy company to immortalize the great Invader Zim in plastic. Me being the impatient insane person that I am, I went ahead and built my OWN custom, earth conquering Irken, and now I’m gonna tell you how to make one too (but if Zim demands to know who told you, I’ll deny everything).

Materials Needed:
Note: You can find just about all of the materials at any Walmart for less than $20
-Crayola Foamy Clay (officially called ‘Model Magic’) or any other type of soft foam clay
-Wire that’s easily shapeable, yet strong enough to hold up your pieces (I used flower arrangement wire since the thready, fibery stuff on the outside helps the clay stick to it)

-A flat sheet of pink foam rubber

-An Exact-o Knife

-Wire cutters

-Super glue or model glue

-A big bowl of water to keep clay moist

-Paint

-Paint brushes
*Before you start, I’d make sure you have a fairly wide and non-sticky place to work

1. The first thing I did was to make the base. Just take some of your clay and make a dome shape big enough to accommodate your statue (I haven’t specified any sizes for any part of the statue, so use your good judgment when making the pieces. You can make a 6in Zim or a 6ft Zim! Just make sure all the pieces are proportionate). Set the base aside for now.
2. Next, we do the legs. Take your wire and cut a piece off (again, use your best judgment on how long it will be. You can always cut the wire if it’s too long, so it’s better to have too long a wire instead of too short). Take your clay and form Zim’s leg and boot around the wire. Then make him a little foot and stick that through the bottom. When you finish, there should be a piece of wire showing from the TOP and BOTTOM of the leg (See the assembly sheet to find out how the legs will look when finished). Repeat for the other leg then set aside to dry.
3. The torso is pretty simple. Don’t bother with any wire since all the limbs and the head will be stuck into this part. Just make a cone shaped body and set aside to dry. I strongly recommend, for ALL the pieces, poking the holes in the body where the pieces will go. This just makes sense.
4. Zim needs arms now. Take another piece of wire and form the arm and glove around it and bend it to however you want his arms to look. There should again be some wire showing from the top and bottom of the arm, but on the bottom where the hand will go, you don’t need a whole lot showing. Then make a hand in any position and stick it on the bottom of the arm (this is why you don’t need a lot of wire showing here). Repeat for other arm then set aside to dry.
5. Ohmygod, Zim has no head!! The head is VERY tricky to make since the shape is extremely hard to get just right (then again I’m a perfectionist). Take some clay and try to mold it into a head shape as best as you can. Once you have a shape you like, stick a piece of wire in the base of the neck so later you can attach the head to the body. For his eyes, just take some clay and make the shapes you want and stick them on his face (or if you can find big, red, oval shaped, glue-on beads then you can use those too). For the antennae, take some more wire and mold the antennae around the wire pieces.
6. The backpack is nice and simple. Just make the shape with a bit of clay, then stick two extremely short pieces of wire into the side that will go into Zim’s back (see the assembly chart to see how it will look). Set aside.
7. Now for those pink arm and neck triangle-thingies. Remember the pink foam rubber you have? Take your exact-o knife and cut out 3 triangles from the foam rubber, making two for the arms and one for the neck. Use some spare wire to poke holes in the centers of the triangles. Set these aside.
8. Now for the most agonizing part… Waiting for your Zim pieces to dry. You’ll know when they’re dry enough to paint, so let’s move on to that step. Basically, just paint all the pieces. There, that was simple.
9. Now you should probably wait overnight to assemble your Irken Invader so everything can dry thoroughly (unlike me, who was too impatient to wait). Now you’ll need your glue. When inserting the wires into the body, put a little bit of glue on them to make them hold, but not too much. Everything you need to know about putting Zim together is illustrated on the assembly chart. Pay careful attention to the arms and head, since the wire on them is poked through those pink triangles. Once your entire Zim is finished, insert the wire at the bottom of his legs into your base (make sure the base is VERY dry) and now the two of you can go off and destroy the Earth!
