12 Jul 99:

Drilled pilot holes in elevator skin. Drilled and cleco'd elevator ribs to front and bottom of skin. Marked and cut "L" slot in skin for elevator horn doubler. Leveled short sections of 2x4 lumber on worktable and placed elevator assembly upright on the boards in preparation for drilling top skin and piano hinge.

13 Jul 99:

Received order from Aircraft Spruce containing spray cans of Zinc Oxide primer and one of those nifty fan-type rivet spacers. Drilled out rivets in center rib assembly so I could prime the mating surfaces. Re-riveted center rib assembly. Drilled and cleco'd piano hinge and top flange of elevator ribs. Rivet spacer works great! Too bad my brain doesn't. Mis-measured rivet line for piano hinge and do not have sufficient edge distance on hinge. Wider hinge ordered from Aircraft Spruce.

17 Jul 99:

Fitted elevator horns and doubler. Time-consuming task. Made cut-out in elevator for rudder clearance. Mis-measured and made it too wide! (Boy, do I feel stupid). Not a major big deal, as I had intended to make molded fiberglass "close-outs" for this anyway. Now I just have to make them a bit deeper than planned. Oh well, stuff happens I guess.

Dis-assembled elevator and deburred all parts. Scotch-brited interior and mating surfaces, cleaned with laquer thinner and primed with Zinc Oxide spray.

21 Jul 99:

Re-assembled elevator with clecos and verified all OK. Riveted everything except the places that will need to be drilled out later for the recessed trim tab installation. Looks good! Hand riveter makes very nice rivet heads; better than the air-powered one at work. Of course, it's tiresome and slow...
