Baby Girl 9: Try Again
© 2000

By the time the night was over, I was completely exhausted and couldn't wait to get home to my bed. Brian was more than willing to drive home, complaining that the parties got longer every year. Things were very quiet on the drive home, until Aaliyah's song, "Try Again" came on the radio.

Brian looked at me as the song played. Occasionally, I would catch his eye and quickly I would look out the window. "You know, I really had a good time today," he said to me turning down the radio.

"Yeah, I did too," I said to the glass in front of me. I couldn't stand to look at him, for fear my heart would break. Brian maneuvered the car up in front of my house. He put the car in park and just sat there staring at me.

"I wouldn't mind if we did that again," he said softly.

"What? Go to the track?" I joked.

Brian smiled. "No, go out. Do things. My schedule's pretty demanding, but I think I could swing coming by and seeing you sometimes. As long as I drop by my parent's house too."

I chuckled. "Well, I don't think I would mind either, us going out, I mean."

"Would you mind meeting my parents?"

"When?"

"Tomorrow?"

I stared at him. "That's kinda fast," I said.

"Well, I guess we can wait a bit. I will be back...for you." Brain climbed out of the car and came around and to let me out. He walked me to my front stoop. We stood there in an awkward silence for a bit. Brian ran his hand through his hand through his hair nervously. "So um, I guess I'll see you again sometime."

"Yeah, I guess," I replied.

"May I kiss you?"

I stared at him momentarily before answering, "No."

"What do you mean no?" Brian asked. He was obviously shocked.

"I mean no. I don't kiss on the first date."

"But technically this is our second date," Brian persuaded.

I looked at him. "Brian, I'm not kissing you." It wasn't that I didn't want to kiss his tender lips, I did, I was just terrified that my kissing him would give me away.

"Alright," Brian said, giving up. "I'll wait." Brian gave me a hug and we said goodnight.

Six months later, Brian and I were still dating. Every time he came to Lexington, he would stop and we would go out. I met his parents and his brother. Everyone was really nice to me. Thankfully he didn't try to introduce me to the rest of the band. AJ would have been able to see right through all the changes I had made.

There came a point that there was another charity dinner. Brian and I actually went together and had a good time. I was asked to share my story of why I was donating, so I did. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. Unlike the previous year's banquet, this year's dinner also had dancing. With the telling of my story, I had every Southern Gentleman in that room lined up to dance with me.

The night came to a close and Brian led me to my door and this time, I allowed him to kiss me. As his arms snaked around my waist and his lips met mine, I melted into his embrace. It felt like coming home, being there in his arms. Our lips parted, but we stayed holding on to each other, neither one of us wanted to let go.

"I don't wanna let you go," Brian whispered. "I wanna hold you forever."

"Do, um, you wanna come inside?" I asked. "I really don't want the night to end just yet." I turned around and unlocked the door and opened it. Grabbing Brian's hand, I pulled him inside. We stood inside my door for a while in a very awkward silence. Suddenly he reached over and kissed me yet again. We stayed there kissing for what seemed like forever. "Brian, take me," I whispered against his lips.

Brian broke the kiss. "What did you say?"

"Take me," I repeated.

"That's what I thought you said." Brian started kissing me more forcefully and we walked back towards my bedroom. We started stripping our clothes off ourselves, only breaking our kiss when something had to come over our head, which wasn't much because Brian was in a tux and I was in dress from the dinner that night. Brian laid me down on my bed and I pulled him towards me. As he plunged himself into me I gasped. It had been a little more than a year since I had had sex and the last time it had been with Brian.

Brian and I made love several times that night, experimenting with different things. It felt good for him to love me for me and not because I was the first girl to come along since Leighanne. I was just afraid that he would figure out who I was. Instead, he just looked at me quizzically, but didn't say anything.

The next morning we were lying in bed sleeping together. I was laying my head on his chest, listening to his heart beat when my alarm went off.

"Whab's bat?" Brian asked groggily.

I smiled to myself. "It's my alarm clock," I informed him, reaching over his chest to hit the snooze button.

Nine minutes later, the radio came on again. The DJ said, "Here's a Backstreet flashback from way back." That's when the song "I'll Be There for You." I reached across Brian to hit the snooze button, but he placed a hand on my arm.

"Don't," he whispered. "I haven't heard this in ages." We lay there listening to the song. It got to the final chorus of the song. Brian's voice was harmonizing with the rest of the Boys. "When the morning comes," he sang on the radio. "When the evening falls. I'll be there, Baby Girl." As his voice sang the words, "Baby Girl," Brian looked at me. He stared at me for a long time. "Baby Girl?" he asked gingerly.
