Baby Girl 2: Letters
© 1999

Hey Baby Girl:

It was great seeing you at MTV. I couldn't believe you were actually there, but then again we did send you an invitation and I didn't think you would be one to stand us up.

Things with Leighanne and I are fine. Her movie should be out sometime next month. Go see it and look for Nick and I in our little cameo roles. Hope we don't end up on the cutting room floor.

We're releasing "Miracle" next week. Just thought I'd let you know. We're going to be filming the video soon, and all the guys have been asking if we could put you in it. So, do you wanna be in the video? I don't know where we'll be filming it yet, but we'll let you know, okay?

Sorry this is so short, but I'm a little pressed for time. So, KIT 4-eva WBS 220/13/415.

"Hey, B. It's Baby Girl. What's up?"

"Oh, nothing much. I just thought I'd let you know that we're going to be filming 'Miracle' this weekend and we're going to be doing it in Hawaii. You should be getting a letter, like tomorrow, with a plane ticket."

"Wow, thanks. Is everything all right? You sound different."

"Oh yeah, everything's fine. We've just been working hard. We'll I don't wanna run up your phone bill, so I'll see you this weekend, Baby Girl."

"Ok, B." I hung up the phone. Something was different; I just couldn't place it.

The next day, I got a letter from him, just like he said. Enclosed was a plane ticket to Hawaii for that weekend. Also enclosed was a letter.

Hey Baby Girl:

I know I just wrote to you and told you everything was great. Well, everything's changed now. Things aren't great. Leighanne and I broke up. She thinks I'm cheating on her...with you. I tried to tell her that we were just friends, but she wouldn't believe me. I'm not saying this to make you feel bad. I'm just telling you the truth.

It happened the day I sent the last letter. It was already in its envelope, sealed and stamped, ready to go out. She came into my room and when she saw the letter she was just like, "Is that for her?" I couldn't understand what had gotten into her. She knew from the beginning that we were pen pals. It started this whole big argument between her and I. She said that when she saw the MTV special where I met you that I was a little too chummy with you and asked if something had gone on. You know as well as I do, nothing went on. Then she found the box where I keep all your letters. She found your pager number and all the things you'd sent me. She knows about how devoted the fans are and it had never bothered her, until now. Maybe she kept it all hidden, I don't know. I mean, I've gotten phone numbers from fans before, and she never said anything about it. I guess that maybe it's because we've been writing back and forth, or something. I really don't know. She wanted to know the significance of the number 13. When I told her, she didn't believe me. She thought it was some secret code. And the fact that I mentioned you, instead of her in my thank you for the album just made her madder.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to spending this weekend in Hawaii with you. Don't ask me why. I think because it'll just be a nice change for once. Well, don't let this letter get you down. And don't take it personally. You didn't break Leighanne and I up; it's kinda been coming for a long time. 220/13/415.

I still felt bad, even after all he'd said. I felt responsible for breaking Brian and Leighanne up. Deep in my heart, I knew it wasn't my fault. Still I wished there were some way I could make it up to Brian. I thought about calling him and telling him that I wasn't going to Hawaii, but he had said that the rest of the guys had been asking for me to be in the video. I didn't want disappoint them. So that Friday, I was on a plane to Hawaii to appear in their music video for the song I had inspired, "Miracle."

When I got off the plane, I saw someone holding a sign that said, "Baby Girl." I knew Brian wouldn't be there at the airport to pick me up because he'd probably get mobbed, so he had sent someone to get me. I went over to the man holding the sign and said, "I'm Baby Girl."

"Aloha," the man said. He kissed me on the cheek and put a lei around my neck. "Mister Littrell said to give you this." He presented me with a sealed envelope and told me to follow him. I was led to a limousine and the driver held open the door for me. Once inside, I opened the envelope.

Baby Girl:

Well, you're here in Hawaii. What do you think so far? Beautiful huh? I thought for a while that you wouldn't come, I mean with the whole Leighanne thing and all. But I'm glad you're here. We start filming tomorrow morning at eight. They'll be another surprise waiting for you at the hotel. I can't wait to see you again. 220/13/415.

I smiled. I was really beginning to like his getting his little notes. It was really sweet of him. When we arrived at the hotel, I went to the front desk to check in.

"Hi, I'm here to check in," I told the man behind the desk.

"Name please."

"Becca Carlson."

He looked down the list and then looked back at me. "I'm sorry, Ms. Carlson, we don't have you listed."

I was speechless for a moment. It then dawned on me that maybe Brian had made the reservations and he couldn't remember my name. "Try Baby Girl."

"Oh! You're with them! Here, this is for you," he handed me my room key and another sealed envelope. I took the envelope and room key from him and looked at it. My room number 1313 on the fourteenth floor. Apparently the owners were superstitious about putting a floor thirteen. I took the elevator to the fourteenth floor and searched for my room. I found it and unlocked the door. It was a suite. Inside was thirteen long stem red roses. I sat down on the queen size bed and opened the envelope the clerk had given me.

BG:

Well, you figured out how you are registered. I hope I didn't cause too much trouble. I couldn't remember your name. Do you like the flowers? I never met a girl who didn't like roses. We'll be there to pick you up tomorrow morning. See you then. 220/13/415.

B-Rok

P.S. Hope you noticed the room I got you too.

I was so happy at that point to even have a friend as good Brian. He was so sweet. I went to bed that night singing "Miracle."

I awoke the next morning to "I Want It That Way" being sung a cappella. The Boys had gained access to my room and were standing around my bed singing to me. I didn't realize it at first. I thought it was the alarm. I reached for the snooze button, but when I hit it nothing happened. The singing continued. I rolled over and looked at the clock. Six-thirty. I then rolled back over and saw AJ standing at the foot of my bed. I was awake.

"How did you guys get in here?" I asked, pulling the sheets up around me.

"We have our ways," AJ told me.

"Good morning, Baby Girl," Brian said. He leaned in to kiss me on the cheek, but I turned ever so slightly and our lips met. I blushed bright red and turned away from him.

"Get dressed, so we can get out of here," Nick said, pulling the covers away from me.

"No," I said, wrestling the covers away from him and throwing them over my head.

I sat there for a moment and then heard the shower running. "Okay, Rok, grab her!" Howie said.

I felt the covers pulled from my hands and I saw Brian put his hands around me. He picked me up and carried me to the bathroom. Howie was holding the shower door open and Brian walked right in with me, fully clothed. Howie shut the door.

"Ah, that's cold," I said, clinging to Brian who was getting soaked with me.

"Well how else are we supposed to wake you up," he said, putting me on my feet. I looked up into his blue eyes. We were both sopping wet. We stood there for a minute, in the cold water, staring at each other. He then leaned down and kissed me full on the lips.
