Two Girls And A Guy

starring Robert Downey, Jr., Heather Graham, Natasha Gregson Wagner

written and directed by James Toback

We all know the story by now. Guy comes home only to see his two girlfriends waiting on him. This sets the tone for a film that I loved. James Toback's script is full of 90's lingo and creates a vivid picture of guilt. Robert Downey, Jr.'s performance is nothing special to me though, because he was on drugs while shooting the film. Frankly, I felt that Jim Carrey could have played the role of Blake Allen, the man who is trapped like a rat. What I loved about this movie was the clever dialogue, the witty characters, and the overall play feel. The film only has three characters. The only thing that bothered me was the ending. I don't want to give it away but it didn't leave me with the feel that the film accomplished anyhting. If it weren't for the ending, this would definitely be the best film I have seen in 1998 so far. Heather Graham gives a good performance but she seems a bit one-dimensional. Natasha Gregson Wagner leaves the film with a secret that is quite pointless. It was hard to measure up TWO GIRLS AND A GUY, because of a great plotline, but how much does it take for a decent ending? B+
