1919 Eliza Beagan (McCarthy), wife of Patrick Beagan of lot 35 is said to have passed at age 95.
In Memoriam Mrs. Patrick Beagan ; There was a feeling of profound sorrow cast over Donagh and vicinity when it became known that Mrs. Patrick Beagan, an old and respected citizen, had passed away. The deceased was in her usual good health, untill four monthes previous to her death, when she contracted pneumonia. Despite the efforts of the best medical skill and the tender and sollcitions nursing of kind freinds on the evening of April 4th 1919, fortified by the Holy Sacrements of the Roman Catholic Church she calmy breathed her soul to God. The deceased was a daughter of the late Thomas McCarthy of Johnstons River, immigrating from Ireland with her parents when a child and was the last survivor of a family of nine, having attained a ripe old age of 95 years. She was one of the first settlers of Donagh, and had the pleasure of seeing the primeval forest replaced by well tilled fields and commodious homesteads. Blest with a vigorous constitution she retained all her facilties right up to her death and could readly relate the happenings of 85 years ago. One blessing which is vouchsafed to few, that during her long lifetime she never needed medical aid untill her last illness. Mrs. Beagan was a most estable Christian lady and few persons were better known or more deservedly esteemed in the community in which she lived. for young and old she had always a kind and cheerful word and a friendly smile and welcome for all her entered her hospitable home. She rejoiced with those who rejoyced and sympathised with those who mourned and stood eveready to sooth the sick and assist the poor in her quiet unabtrusive way and was ever happy when forgetting self and at all times and on all occasions contributing to the confort and happiness of others. the rememberance of her many good deeds will long keep her memory green in Donagh. The funeral which took place from her home, Sunday the 6th inst to Fort Augustus, was not withstanding the almost impossible conditions of the roads one of the largest seen in Fort Augustus, where a funeral service was performed by her beloved pastor the Rev. A. J. MacDonald after which all that was mortal of a good christian woman was laid to rest in St. Patricks cemetary beside her husband who predeacesed her 32 years ago. Of a famuily of eleven she is survived by six namely Mrs. James OConnel of Tarantum, Mrs. Woods, Mrs. Rosche, Mrs. McPhee, Thomas P. Beagon, Mt. Ryan and Michael on the homestead, besides a number of grandchildren, who will ever cherish her memory. May her soul rest in peace....

1920s In the 1920's, regional seniority for en-inemen was expanded to include the Island Division. That spelled havoc for many Islanders. Prior to regional seniority Island enginemen held seniority, as drivers and firemen, only on P.E.I. Conversely mainland enginemen held no rights on the Island. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers was an national organization. It was influential and in its wisdom it deemed jobs on the Island Division should belong to regional members. The seniority list then encompassed all enginemen in the Atlantic Region. In effect that precluded the possibility of any Islander ever again becoming a locomotive fireman or driver. Men from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and as far west as Riviere de Loup in Quebec descended upon this million acre farm like a plague of locusts and like locusts they gobbled up the road work that had fed the families of Island enginemen. Some Islanders like Ev Beagan, who had been driving on P.E.I., had to 90 as far from home as Riviere de Loup and work as firemen to hold a job. Some could not get work anywhere. That no Islander would ever again enter road service as engineman is clearly indicated by examining the seniority list of the Island Division enginemen dated April 1948. (See Appendix.) From 1921 until the regional seniority pact was broken in 1935 not one name was added to the Island division seniority list of the B. of L.F.& E. During those years mainlanders ran the rails on P.E.I. Islanders walked the streets.
