1666 "Hi, As to the Pickerings, I know very little. I have a John Pickering, b 1666. Mary, his dau. married Ambrose Sloper. I assume (scary thing in this business) this is the same Sloper family that John Chevalier married, but I cannot be certain. I also have a Thomas Pickering who married a Mary Janvrin in 1743 (NH I guess). Have no idea where the Pickerings originated.Don't know if what I have is a "real" citation or not, but here goes: "Quiet Adventurers in North America" by Turk, published 1983except for parenthesis, this is a direct quote from KNIGHT, John formerly John CHEVALIER:
A2. Elizabeth b. 1687 mar John JANVRIN of J (Jersey), whose estate she admin . in 1720. She mar 2. Rev. Joseph Adams, 1689-1783, son of Joseph and Hannah (Bass) Adams, uncle of President John Adams. " Genealogy Dictionary of Maine and NH" by Noyes partial quote of JOHN Chevalier listing:
Elizabeth, b. 8 July 1687 ......
I also found a handwritten genealogy of John Knight in the library of the NH Historical Soc. in Concord. The genealogy was done by the wife of a NH governor who was really into this stuff. Don't know her name or if she was considered reliable. I sensed that she was really good from the librarian, but this is just a subjective conclusion on my part. I returned from a jaunt to the NH seacoast in early June. To my delight, I saw the house that Elizabeth and Joseph Adams lived in. It is still owned and lived in my descendants of the Adams family. It is right across from the fire station and in good condition. In the Newington library is also some stuff which I did not have a chance to see. Should you be anywhere nearby, Newington, NH is just north of Portsmouth. Also, the Congregationalist Church in which he preached is still used. Bet there was a lot of fire and brimstone there. There is a brass plaque to Elizabeth there. Jan Newsome jnewsom7@airmail.net

This Jonathan is distinct and separate from Son John referred above.
We need not, I think, fear that any of the sons had been cut off with the proverbial shilling. Each had been provided for by his father. Indeed, Nathaniel went on to become an Alderman of the Cittie of London and lived a full and fulfilling life. It has not so far been possible to identify the actual building in which this family lived, but I am ever hopeful that Deeds may turn up to settle the point. Meantime we can almost see the domestic arrangement of a fairly properous households goods and chattels as the testatrix surveys what she sees from her bed of pain. Almack, A Village Heritage -The Story of Blandford St. Mary, (Friary Press, Longmans(Dorchester) Ltd., Dorchester, Dorset, England), pg. 27
I found this book in the Dorchester Public Library which I visited last fall. James Brine married Jane Knight on 07 September 1767 in Blandford St. Mary. They lived in the Down House which they leased from Sir Thomas Pitt. They had one son, Augustus Brine who was baptized on 05 November 1769 according to the Blandford St. Mary Parish Register, Transcript 1581-1812. At thirteen, Augustus was painted by William Singleton Copley. The painting is titled, "Midshipman Brine" and is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY. Augustus rose to the rank of Rear Admiral in the British Royal Navy.
Jane died in Blandford St. Mary on 28 August 1770 according to the Blandford St. Mary Parish Register, Transcript 1581-1812 which I located in the Dorset Public Record Office in Dorchester which is the county seat of Dorset. I have copies of part of "A Village Heritage - The Story of Blandford St. Mary" which I will copy and send to you. I'll try to do this in the next week. Hope that this might help you! Many thanks for your reply to my John Knight query.
I'm afraid I can't make any Newfoundland or Jersey connections for you. Apart from his time in New England my John Knight, guessing from where his daughters were married, seems to have lived a typical naval officer's life and been based near Royal Navy ports - Portsmouth, Chatham and Devonport. I have now looked at your web sites which my searches had not thrown up before and picked up some references to him, Thank you very much. Was this the website you were referring to?
You have an incredibly impressive collection of references! It helped me clear up some details of his second wife, Love Frye, widow of Dr. Peter Oliver. The most serious gap I now have is rather basic - his birth! I shall try and find his father's will next and see if that gives me something to work back from. Allen - hi - just spent some time browsing through your web site. You've done one heck of a lot of work! I did a search within your pages for Knights in Devon, and came up with the towns/villages of Staverton, Topsham, Exeter, Dartmouth, Churston, Withicombe, and Shaldon. The nearest to Iddesleigh is Exeter, and this is about 20 miles away. The rest of the locations (except Withicombe, which I couldn't locate - wonder if they meant Widecombe-in-the-Moor, which is on Dartmoor?) are decidedly further south, and most have a strong connection with the coast, except Staverton. This coastal connection is reflected in the occupations of your ancestors, whereas all of mine are carpenters, wheelwrights, dressmakers, village schoolmasters, agricultural labourers, etc. Of course, it is entirely possible that members of the family *went away to sea* to seek their fortunes - but I'm not aware of any. I'll take another, more careful, look at your Web site, and get back to you if I find any clues, and I'll also copy this e-mail to some others who I know are investigating Knights in Devon. It's a long shot, but you never know! Please get back to me if there's anything more we can do in order to explore any possible links. Cheers, Dick. rkwilli@mcmail.com

1800's "From "The Pride of Poole 1688-1851" by Derek Beamish, John Dockerill and John Hillier, ISBN 0 9504914-7-0; it's printed in Great Britain but I got it through inter-library loan a couple of years ago - I thought it was quite an entertaining book, about the city council's (very amusing) affairs over the years/centuries. Mentioned were Henry Gillingham Knight, Joseph Knight, (p. 126), and H.G. Knight and Co., and Robert Knight (p. 203). I didn't note anything but their names (stupid me) but I believe they were members of the Poole municipal council in the 1800s. Barbara Pederson

May 19, 1840 The information I have about Louisa Knight is as follows. She was born (or baptized) in Winterbourne Stickland, Dorset, England, on May 19, 1840. She married Albert Hannam Feb 4 1864 in Winterbourne Houghton. I have a copy of that marriage certificate. It lists her father as George Knight. Thier first child, Henry George was born April 30 1864 at Travellers Rest Durweston Dorset. I have spent the majority of my time and energy looking at the Hannam branch but in the process of researching the Hannam surname, I have come across a family of Knights, with the head being George and indication that he married an Elizabeth Edwards. They did have a child called Louisa who was born on the right date. Elizabeth appears to have died early. All of this is speculative as I have not yet researched Winterbourne stickland and if there is another George Knight in stickland it confuses the issue. Also her birth date comes from census records in canada. Hope this helps Vicky vhannam@sickkids.on.ca

1851 In the 1851 CENSUS I found the large number of Knight's in the Poole area. Interesting that Celia Knight who was 15 is registered in the folio of Eleanor Budden in Canford. Trying to now determine if she was an Aunt, or relationship to Sarah. Regards William buddenw@mail2.theonramp.net
