1507 "CHEVALIER, ANTOINE-RODOLPHK, a Realous Huguenot, born at Montchamps in 1507. When a youth he was compelled to fly into England for life. He completed his studies at Oxford, and being recommended to the Duke of Somerset, he was selected by him to teach the Princess (afterward Queen) Elizabeth the French language. Chevalier subsequently held the professorship of Hebrew at Cambridge, but resigned it in 1570 to return to France. He was again compelled to fly by the renewed per??ecution at the time of the Bartholomew ma??re, and he died in exile at Guernsey in 1572. He was a voluminous author on classical subjects. During his short residence abroad, he left his son Samuel at Geneva, for the purpose of being educated for the Church, under Theodore de Besa. On the revival of the persecutions in France, Samuel took refuge in England, and was appointed minister of the French church in London in 1591, and afterward of the Walloon church at Canterbury in 1595. Mr. Chevalier Cobbold, M.P., belongs to this family. Huguenot Settlers in North America and Europe Cyril DuBourdieu cyril.dub@nf.sympatico.ca

I looked at the Jersey lines - there was a Marguerite Chevallier who married Jean Malzard, their daughter Jeanne Malzard married into the Chevalier male line ancestral to the Aspall Chevalliers - but examination of the dates rule out also this Marguerite Chevallier connection as a possibility for descent from Antonie-R and S also." 1591 "I couldn't - and still can't - match descent from Antonie-Rodolphe and Samuel le Cheval(i)ier to the Aspall Chevallier line with descent from Antoine and Raulin Chevalier of Jersey, because of the dates.
I'm wondering if there might not be a simple transcription or interpretive explanation leading to misunderstanding.
I was fortunately able to obtain a copy of Samuel Smiles' book, 'The Huguenots...', first published 1868. I wanted to see if Smiles himself had stated the descent from Antonie-Rodolphe and Samuel his son to Rev John Barley Chevallier and to Chevallier Cobbold M.P. He does, but I could not find his definite source(s) for what I needed to know.
I think his source must be the 'List of Foreign Protestants, and Aliens, resident in England 1618-1688' printed for the Camden Society in 1862.
An entry for this comes up in digitised form, in a search for Samuel le Chevallier, through Google. What the entry paragraph read exactly was:
"CHEVALIER, JOHN (p.45); DANIEL (p.49 and 57). Samuel Le C. was minister of the French Church in London in 1591 and in Canterbury in 1595. A pedigree of a family of this name is in the Add. MS. Mus.19, 123, fol. 51. Another family has been long settled at Ipswich, from whom in the female line the present Member J. Chevalier Cobbold, M.P. is descended. The name is well known in agriculture as that of the introducer of the Chevalier barley."
Without having had the opportunity to study the Add. MS, I wonder if the correct interpretation of this paragraph is that J. Chevalier Cobbold is descended in the female line from another family of the same name to that of Samuel le Chevalier - rather than being descended in the female line from Samuel le Chevalier? (I have been finding this "in the female line" confusing anyway, because I don't know what it means. E.g. does it mean in the female line from Samuel - i.e. a daughter - or does it mean in the female line of Chevallier Cobbold - i.e. his mother? My attempts to trace a line back to Samuel through the Garneys, Fiskes, Syers, Morleys etc have so far proved absolutely fruitless!)
I note also that the paragraph does not say that the Add. MS. Mus. doc is the pedigree of the family of Samuel Le Chevalier. It merely says that it is a pedigree "of a family of this name"."Research interest of Calia Chevallier calia_chevallier@xtra.co.nz

There are various Stowes in England but I think that this is the one near Buckingham which is now a well known school. They had Temple Chevalier 1674-1722. He moved from Jersey to Suffolk in 1702 but had no family. He left his Suffolk estate to a nephew, Clement Benjamin, and the name Temple contnued for at least the next 5 generations. I was also inerested in your privateer and attach my list of Cheval[l]ier sea captains. Temple moved to Aspall, Suffolk in 1702 and the Land Registry is full of property sales just before he left as he must have been disposing of his Jersey estate. 1659 "Al, Good to hear from you - especially your jaunt to Peabody Inst. It is on my agenda - however considering where I live and where Peabody is, my agenda will have to wait. I find the Knight background fascinating - full of conjecture and potentially conflicting stories. From a factual basis, all I can determine is that John Knight was in Portsmouth by 1680. He used Jean Chevalier as his name and eventually changed it. Acc. to Libby, Noyes, he was taxed in Portsmouth in 1681 and on the gr. jury in 1684. On March 29, 1684, he married Bridget Sloper of Portsmouth. A son, John Knight, was b. January 29, 1684-85. Elizabeth Knight followed on July 8, 1687. Brewster's Rambles, Second Edition, is said to have an entry by Mary SHERBURNE Sloper about this birth - she was the maternal grandmother. From John Knight's will (a copy of which I have) it is obvious that he was very successful as a merchant. This was not uncommon in Portsmouth at that point in time. He married well, as did his children - thus, it appears that he must have been acceptable to the the merchant class of that day - despite the lack of knowledge of his ancestors. How he met or knew John Janvrin is unknown. One theory is that the families knew one another in Jersey - a real possibility. (One researcher speculated that Janvrin's ancestors in Jersey were Knights/Chevalier. I believe your webpage gives an early date for the mention of the name in Jersey). Another is that they knew one another through business, Knight was a merchant and Janvrin a sea captain - bringing desirable goods from abroad. Regardless, John Knight "promises" his 10 - 12 y.o. dau. (Elizabeth) to John Janvrin. Janvrin waits until she is abt. 19 y .o., before marrying her. They have a family, and he continues his voyaging across the Atlantic. Eventually he dies (of yellow fever, it is said) and the widow remarries Rev. Joseph Adams - another highly desirable marriage from a linage and social status point of view. Charles Clark's academic book , Settling the Eastern Frontier, gives an interesting view of the period. John Knight is listed by the National Huguenot Society as a "qualified" Huguenot - whatever that is supposed to mean. The listing is for John Knight / Jean Chevalier who m. Bridget Sloper. His birthdate is given as August 30, 1659 - no birthplace is mentioned. As much as I dislike that idea of jumping through the hoops of linage societies, it may be that the only hope of obtaining other information about him, is to follow the Huguenot society records. Other than that, I have reached a brick wall. I am somewhat obcessed about the history of this man - whose background remains unknown. I shall be in Boston in Sept. and plan on spending my time at the library of NEGHS. Possibly something will turn up. Not likely, but possible. Thanks for your work and contact, Jan jnewsom7@airmail.net
It was really my job to contact you re: this interesting coincidence. As it turned out, Sally Ford (the one who found your website) contacted me by email. She was responding to a message re: John Knight that I had posted on your website. We have had a ball sharing information with one another. In fact, we plan to meet in mid October in NH . I shall have my mother and sister in tow, so it will be a real family affair. Our relationship to a bit odd. It goes something like this:
ELIZABETH KNIGHT m. JOHN JANVRIN, their daughter
MARY JANVRIN m. THOMAS PICKERING (she was his second marriage)
TEMPERANCE PICKERING (dau. of first marriage). m. JOHN KNIGHT (don't know exactly where he fits in) The connection is that Mary Janvrin (my ancestor) raised Temperance Pickering (Sally's ancestor). Sally has inherited Temperance's teapot. Allegedly, Elizabeth Knight Janvrin Adams took tea from this very teapot. Sally also has a family letter which makes reference to Elizabeth Knight - thus, this is all very exciting. We shall take tea from Temperance's teapot and try to read old family letters. Sounds like a genealogy seance to me !!! Jan Newsome jnewsom7@airmail.net

1677. Philippe Valpy dit Janvrin. Born in St. Brelade, Jersey, the third son of Jacques Valpy dit Janvrin and Marie Le Couteur. c.1700 Engaged in trading with Newfoundland and in New England where his brother, John Janvrin, was a settler of some prominence (1707) in Dover, New Hampshire. (John married Elizabeth Knight) 1710 (Sept). Married Elizabeth, the daughter of Philippe Orange of St. Brelade, Jersey. (Ship Owner and Gaspé trader) 1721. Returning to Jersey, as Master of the Esther in September of this year Philippe Janvrin was obliged to spend a quarantine period off-shore - the vessel had visited Bordeaux and Nantes in France where a virulent plague was endemic. He dropped anchor just off Belcroute in the west of St. Aubins bay where just a few days later he himself succumbed to the illness and, aged 44 years, died. The Jersey Authorities were unwilling to allow his body to be brought ashore but give instructions that a burial could take place on a little (uninhabited) islet in Portelet Bay, just around the Noirmont Point. Philippes body was lowered into a small boat and rowed around the headland by three of the crew to be interred in a shallow hollow scraped in the thin soil of the rocky islet. A signal was given to the shore where his wife and some members of the family had gathered. The Minister from St. Brelade had been called and he read the usual service for the burial of the dead and another signal then made to the islet. The crew men covered the body and then returned to the Esther by rowing again around the headland and awaited the end of the quarantine period. Philippes wife Elizabeth later had an inscribed memorial erected on the spot but there is no evidence now. It has been suggested that the remains were re-buried later in St. Brelades churchyard; there is no record in the registers. The entire top of this islet, the Ile au Guerdain as it was known, was cleared during the Napoleonic wars early in the nineteenth century to build a large Watch Tower. This watch tower remains there today and the islet is still known colloquially as Janvrins Tomb. Ray Le Pivert >Jersey. picus@itl.net
1677 "At the Revocation Pierre Chevallier of a noble family of Normandy fled to England. Soon after this date we find a Pierre Le Chevalier in Charleston, S. C., and Jean Le Chevalier in New York, while Philip Chevalier appears in Delaware as early as 1677. That they were immediate relatives is quite probable. The refugee to England had a son also named Pierre, who married an English lady, and who in 1720 came to Philadelphia where he founded an honorable posterity."

1692 "The New York Chevaliers are descended from Jean le Chevalier, who was probably related to the other emigrants of that name who settled in Philadelphia and Charleston. He married Marie de la Plaine in the Dutch Church in 1692. From Normandy came Francois le Comte, who was married to Catharine Lavandier in 1693. He seems to have been one of the victims of the laws which allowed the priests to bring up Huguenot children in the Roman faith, for before his marriage he was compelled to make abjuration."

1696 "I am seeking any information on Jean Janvrin and John Knight (Chevalier) of Jersey. Jean Janvrin, the father, married Elizabeth LeConsteur in the Isle of Jersey. Their son Jean Janvrin came to Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1696 on his ship, The Four Friends. There is suppose to be a log of the ship but as yet I haven't located it. In 1706 her married Elizabeth Knight (Chevalier). The marriage is recorded thus: John Janvrin of Jersey, belonging to England was legally married to Elizabeth Knight, alias Sheavallier (Chevalier) of the town of Dover in New England upon the 12th day of September, 1706. Jean Janvrin died of yellow fever in 1719 in Lisbon while on one of his trading voyages. John Knight, the father of Elizabeth Knight, was born, I think, in the Isle of Jersey August 30, 1659. There is a document that says he was taxed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire along with his servant in 1661. He changed his name to Chevalier and did very well in this country. He married Bridget Sloper in Portsmouth, had five children, and died May 11, 1721.It is said that he was a French Hugonaut fleeing from Catholic France. 3. PIERRE3 CHEVALIER (JEAN2 CHEVALLIER, NICOLLAS1) 4 was born Abt. 26 September 1742 in St Helier, Jersey5, and died unknown. He married RACEL MACHON6 12 February 1769 in St Helier, Jersey6. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown.
Notes for PIERRE CHEVALIER: From Jersey Society letter dated 11 Mar 1985 - "We had difficulty in establishing which Pierre Chevalier was the father of Pierre Francois (b. 26.4.1807) as in the entry for the marriage in St. Helier. The only Pierre baptised in St. Saviour was baptised 9.2.1766 which seems too old to be the wife of Rachel Horman who was baptised 2.5.1782"
From Jersey Society letter dated 23 Apr 1985 - We decided that Pierre, bap 28/1/1778 in St. Helier, was the father of Pierre bap 26/4/1807 in St. Saviour. We found a Pierre Chevalier bap in 26/9/1742 in St. Helier whom we think is the father of Pierre bap 28/1/1778
The relationship of the Pierre as a father and Pierre as the son are not exact there were two options identified by the Societe Jersiaise. This option has been chose as Pierre's father in the other option the Jean (aka John) appears to have left to live in Suffolk, and we would not expect his children to be baptised in St Helier. The other Chevalier tree is clearly related and their lives at Aspall in Suffolk are recorded in the book exact in the family file.

I am currently trying to trace my family back. At the moment there are two distinct branches, the Suffolk line, which spells Chevallier, and my line which has a single l. At the time the Chevalliers moved to Suffolk they were godparents to my Chevaliers. So I suspect on the small island of Jersey they were closely related. All I need to do is find the link! I only started recently so I will be patient. From what I can determine from your database extract you have some of Suffolk Chevalliers (you have recorded some of them with a single l) and some others. Much of the associated information is missing, so although some of the names relate, without dates or something else to connect them it is difficult to link up. I have attached what I believe to be the early years of my history. Tom Chevalier Tom@chevalier22.freeserve.co.uk
1700 "Hi Alex, or anybody else out there with an interest, You would'nt happen to know who the 12 children of Clement & Marie are. I have 3 on the Dbase, Clement, Deborah & Elizabeth. (Elizabeth I note married one Joshua Pipon, seeing there is a 'Pipon' interest on the list of late.) Marie Dumaresq calculates out to be a 2nd cousin to me some 11 generations removed. My interest in Chevalier is to see if this line can be connected to one Catherine Chevalier, daughter of John Chevalier who married Richard Valpy mc. 1750. of the Valpy's of St John. Catherine would probably have been born c.1725 and her father John some 20 - 30 yrs before that. c.1700. Thus far I have never been able to establish a link connecting myself to the Valpy's of St John, the link just may exist thru the marriage of Catherine Chevalier to Richard Valpy and knowing more about the 12 siblings of Clement Chevalier & Marie Dumaresq might turn up the goods. Descendants of Richard Valpy and Catherine Chevalier live here in New Zealand and the original emigrants W.H. Valpy & Caroline Jeffreys and their family settled here in Dunedin in 1849. (see: Amorial of Jersey). I'd certainly like to be able to show a link up with our local Valpy's of Dunedin. Regards. Donald Valpy Weston. (Don). weston.d@es.co.nz

Nov. 29, 1720 "John Knight alias Chevalier married Bridget Sloper. One of their sons was Temple Knight. He is mentioned in John Knight's will written Nov. 29, 1720. Temple is to inherit the Knight house in Portsmouth, land behind the house, the little garden and money or shipping interests. So obviously Temple is a family name but I don't know how it connects. Another son was Captain John Knight who married Elizabeth Shapleigh. One of their 12 or 13 children was Ensign John Knight who married Patience Smith and after her death married Temperance Pickering in 1759. Another of their children was Elizabeth Knight who married Jean Janvrin. After he died of yellow fever, Elizabeth married the Rev. Joseph Adams, the minister in Newington. Elizabeth's daughter Mary Janvrin married Thomas Pickering after the death of his first wife Mary Downing. Mary Downing and Thomas Pickering were the parents of Temperance Pickering, the person I am so fascinated by. Temperance's step-mother therefore was Mary Janvrin, the mother of my great, great, great grandfather Richard Pickering. And so, Temperance's step-mother and her husband were first cousins! Dizzying! Temple is a whole new thread. I hope to do a lot of work in Portsmouth this fall so will explore it. Sally Ford // 433 Bay Road // Durham, NH 03824 voice/fax +1 603 868 5850 sford@nh.ultranet.com

1735 "Hi Allen, Although I am not on the Dorset List, I recently received an E-mail from another lister to tell me they had noticed my interest in the CHEVALIER name in Suffolk and had also noticed it as one of your own names of interest on the Dorset list.
My own interests are centered around Aspall in Suffolk and the following Chevallier family members JOHN CHEVALLIER m. MARY ALEFOUNDER in Aspall Suffolk in 1735 John was the brother of CLEMENT CHEVALLIER who was married to JANE GARNEYS and they were both the sons of CLEMENT CHEVALLIER of the Isle of Jersey.
Although JOHN CHEVALLIER is my only direct ancestor I do have some other Chevallier names (all in Suffolk) on file if you are interested.
To explain the move from the Isle of Jersey to Suffolk - it appears that Clement Chevallier was left an estate in Aspall (Suffolk) by his cousin Temple Chevallier who was buried at Aspall in 1722 age 47. In 1727/8 Clement Chevallier brought apple trees from Jersey to Aspall and started to make and sell cider. He built Aspall Hall, and cider is still made there today. I hope this was of interest, please let me know if you think I can help further. Mick , London - England mick.lou.phillips@virgin.net

Captain Andrew Snape Hamond, bart., 1738-1828 and his son Admiral Graham Eden Hamond, 1799-1862, were officers in the British Navy. Typed transcription of manuscript memoirs of Sir Andrew Snape Hamond also available. Papers also available on microfilm #M1772-1774 (originals) and #M603 (transcripts of memoirs) Hoffman, Paul P. Guide to naval papers of Sir Andrew Snape Hamond, Bart., 1766-1783, and Sir Graham Eden Hamond, Bart., 1799-1825. Correspondence of A.S. Hamond with Hans Stanley, governor of the Isle of Wight discusses a naval appointment, a land settlement scheme on the Ohio opposed by Lord Hillsborough, the Gaspée affair, Bunkers Hill, naval operations in Virginia and on the Delaware (Lord Dunmore's retreat), the Staten Island Peace Conference, Saratoga, General Burgoyne, the burning of New York, Hessians, consequences of the American-French alliance, British foreign and economic affairs, and the guardianship of Felix Viret. Memoirs of A.S. Hamond, ca. 1815, cover his career as an active sea officer to 1794 and include a hand drawn map of the Brandywine campaign. Complementing these are Hamond's memoir, 1783-1785, of his part in the American Revolution, 1775-1777; his account, 1771-1773, of his command of the Arethusa; and a journal, 1779, of the Roebuck's second voyage to America. There are brief comments on the French Revolution and court-martial proceedings against the Bounty mutineers. The collection also contains bound volumes of letters and orders, 1771-1783, pertaining to A.S. Hamond's commands of HMS Arethusa, Barfleur, Roebuck and Champion, and service as Lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia, Commissioner of the Navy, and Commander-in-Chief of H.M. Ships at Halifax, August 1781 to January 1783. Papers of Admiral G.E. Hamond are primarily concerned with the Mediterranean theater during the Napoleonic Wars and consist of his annotated copy of "A chronological list of the captains of His Majesty's Royal Navy"; and letters and orders from his commands of HMS Plantagenet, Lively, Victorious, Rivoli, Wellesley, and Spartiate; plus some remarks on Courts Marital, some general orders, and an incomplete table of arrivals and sailings at Malta, 1805. Of interest are Admiral Hamond's papers from his service as senior officer at Malta, 1805-1806, describing the abortive invasion of the Kingdom of Naples and subsequent establishment on Sicily. 1775 "I am looking for anyone who can help me identify the parents of a young girl named Annie Chevalier who lived in Jersey around 1775-80. She left Jersey for Labrador to work as a servant for a Philip and Nathaniel LLoyd who owned a fish factory in St. Paul River, Labrador. She became pregnant and had a son whom she called Louis David Chevalier. He would have been born aroun 1780. Philip died about 1804 and then Nathaniel adopted the boy Louis David. However, I feel Philip was the biological father. When Louis David had a son he called him Philip. Possibly Annie named her child after her father, or the name Louis was after the King of France and David was after her father or a favorite brother. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Regards to all, Carolyn Grant Tsawwassen, BC Canada crgrant@telus.net

1790 "Hello Allen, Thank you for replying to me. I do not think I contacted you directly before. I have reviewed your list of ships, Capt. and owners. Your list is my source for the Philip Chevalier info and for the ship the Dilligence, Capt. Robert Knight who sailed in March 1799. (Source Keith Matthews Collection). What is confusing is that there are two entries with the same info except one says the ship weighed 49 tons and the other says 47 tons. One line said only year of 1799 and the other said March 1799. One gave info on destinations and the other said all hands and owner? lost at sea. I have assumed that it was basically the same trip. Am I correct, or is it not conclusive? I am trying to find out if there were any passengers aboard that ship and if there was a list of names. I am looking for verification that a young girl by the name of Mary Ann Vane Courtenay sailed on a ship likely from Exeter to Quebec City, possibly via Newfoundland in either 1790 or 1799. Off the Canadian coast the ship was caught in huge storm and was swept up the Strait of Belle Isle and sank on the rock shelves off Forteau Bay Labrador. The story is that from this terrible marine disaster only the girl was saved. She was trapped there for the winter and ended up marrying one of the local fellows named Louis Chevalier from St. Paul's River Labrador. Louis Chevalier was the son of Annie Chevalier a French Hugenot from the Channel Islands who had come to Labrador to work in the fish factories. She became pregnant by either one of the owner's, a Philip Lloyd, or another employee of the fish factory. She named her son Louis, perhaps the name of the father of her baby or the name of a family member back in the Channel Islands? T When Louis grew up and married Mary Ann Vane Courtenay, he named their only son Philip. Perhaps after Louis's biological father Philip Lloyd? The son Philip married a girl named Nancy Keats, and they had only one son, Louis David Chevalier. Regarding the spelling of the name Chevalier, around 1839 Mary Ann Vane Courtenay had signed a baptism certificate as Mary Ann Chevallier and yet her grandson Louis David signed his name Chevalier. Her son Philip's presence in the area was not recorded by census records or missionary reports. Everyone thought he died fairly early in life as did his wife Nancy, but I finally found a record of his name appearing in a 1848 census record. His mother Mary Ann was recorded as well. I then concluded that perhaps the reason he appeared not to be living, was because he was away at sea. So when I saw a Philip Chevalier on your list I thought then maybe it was true. The strange coincidence is that Philip's grandfather was William Courtenay, 2nd Viscount ( Earls of Devon) of Powderham Castle in Devon England. The 2nd Viscount had a ship called "The Neptune" so to see a Philip Chevalier on a ship called The Neptune gave me a start to say the least! I have communicated with Allen Whitworth re the Chevalier family and he sent me a family tree. But there was not an Anne there that would fit into being my Annie Chevalier. I see you have the middle name Temple. Are you related to the Chevalier's (Chevallier's)? Anyway through him and a Daryla Cuthbertson I have an Anne Chevalier who married Jean Norman about 1755. Their children were Anne, Jean Amice, Suzanne, possibly from the St Lawrence parish. But there the daughter Anne would have the surname Norman. Perhaps you know something more? Anyway, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Kindest regards, Carolyn Grant Delta, British Columbia crgrant@telus.net

Hi There- I have not been much into geneology so I am not sure what help this may be to you, but thought I might try.
My Grandfather's name was John (Jack) Chevalier DeLaMare (I would have to check with my files to check Birth, Wedding and Death dates) He married Jeanne Winter Son-Winter Lee DeLaMare Then there's me
If this at all follows the lines you have, I have more information, but as it is late I don't have them out right now, I just happened on this page while searching the www for other information and found it interesting to see a John Chevalier of Jersey (where we have geneological lines) Sara Petterson sarryn@msn.com

No, don't worry, that's my point - Anna Maria is somehow connected to all "your" Chevalliers, but I cannot find mention of her explicitly on any of your sites. I "know" she is connected as a family tree, since lost, linked her as widow of Temple Chevallier, stating - "born 18 June 1841, married (Henry Brady) 3 June 1873, daughter of Thomas Kinder Esq, widow of Temple Chevallier Esq. No info on date of death." Any ideas where else to try and verify this? Many thanks Nicholas Webb NCVWebb@aol.com

Dear Erika Clark,
After seeing your message yesterday I was looking through some wills today at the LDS centre and found the following will for a Jean Norman - apparently no wife or children so must have been quite young when he died. Will dated 5 Jan. 1782, Proved 5 Oct. 1782 of St Lawrence Father: Jean Norman, Mother: Anne Chevalier Brother: Amice Norman Sisters: Anne, Susanne Nephews: Jean Norman, Philippe Anley Niece: Anne Nicolle
I found one other Norman who appears to be related: Marie Norman, will made and approved 1781of Trinity parish brothers: Amice and Philippe other bequests to Henri Nicolle (son of Henri, son of Henri) and sister Anne (no indication of relationship) Regards James Brannan (Lyon, France) Interests: Renouf, Blampied, Du Pré, Hue, Le Hardy...
