Preface
Peter Beagan Of PEI and his namesake are both the least known
of all the Beagans researched so far. The first Peter Beagan shows up in
a land transaction document in PEI in 1842. Its assumed he is a brother to
Patrick, John, Owen, Catherine, Bridget, Margaret, Alice, and Nancy. At
some point the elder Peter settles in Ontario with the Beagans of lot 27,
Kinkora, PEI. Than later again he seems to appear in Boston. The
younger Peter, the subject of this outline, can easily be confused with the
elder Peter when they both appear in the Boston area. At the time of this
writing there is no record of Peters birth or death and I hope the following
outline spurs someone into finding the wheres and whens.
Continued from Owen Beagan and Ann Trainor;
June 1859 Rose Cain or Kane, later to marry Peter Beagan of Newton, MA is
born in Nova Scotia. 1901 Census of ward 2, Newton,Ma, Middlesex Co.
May 1864 Peter Beagan is recorded as born in Nova Scotia in the 1900
census of Newton, MA.
How Peter became born to Owen and Ann in Nova Scotia is a
puzzle waiting to be solved. There is no question he is Owen and Anns
son for he is listed in his brother Lucius will as such.
Below is part of a file on the Beagans of Nova Scotia and it doesnt take
too much of a leap to suppose that Owen had relatives in Nova Scotia and
was on a visit when Peter was born.
June 1859 Rose Cain or Kane, later to marry Peter Beagan of Newton, MA is
born in Nova Scotia. 1901 Census of ward 2, Newton, Ma, Middlesex Co.
1860-61 Census of town of Pictou, Nova Scotia records James Beagan as
head of a household of 4 males and 2 females. He is married and over
40 and under 50. Also 1 married female over 40 and under 50, one single
male over 15 and under 20, one single male over 20 and under 30, and
one single female over 20 and under 30. There was 1male death over 4
and under 5 since March 30, 1860. His neighbors were Alice Fraser,
Helen McCulloch, Alesct Grant, James M Larm, Charles Fogo, William
Broroming, James Webster, David Mculloch, William Goldsmith, Henry
Elliot, George A. McKinzie, James Brown, Malcom Campbell, William
Browning, James Simpson, Andrew Henderson, James Stewart, Rev.

In estimating the condition of this school, the drawbacks that the
master and the children have encountered should be considered; Mr.
Began, as a primary teacher, has been faithful to his duties.
Peters father, Owen, has been a school teacher for at least 3
years at this point.
1866 A Peter Beagan is born to Owen and Ann according to 1881 census
of Donagh, lot 35, PEI.
The above is in conflict with the census of 1901 taken in Newton,
MA and a later statement given at his naturalization hearing but this is the
date I will use till someone can find out a better source.
Dec.7,1866 Owen submits a petition to the probate court adjucating Cecilia's
attempt to probate the estate of his brother John. Careful reading
suggests he is trying to preserve the estate for the benefit of his niece
and nephew and opposing Cecelia's attempt to sell the land.
Jan. 28, 1867 Peter Beagan's date of birth according to his naturalization
papers on Nov.26, 1897. #228-42 USCC. F3, .I646 1983x.

This appears to be the the 3rd different birth date we have for Peter.
Feb.17,1867 Ann Trainor is the sponsor of Patrick McEremy, born to Owen
McEreny and Catherine Hourihan at St. Patrick's.
Ann would be 31 now but its possible this is a different Ann Trainor,
from the Trainors of Ft. Augustus. It would be the only contact with the
McErenys recorded if its Peters mother.
March 16,1867 Owen Began and Mary Holland are the sponsors to the baptism
of Mary Ellen Koughn at St. Patrick's. She was born the 26th inst to
William Koughan and An McCarthy. PP Thos Phelan.
Owen is 40 years old at this point and is still farming the 50 acres
on Donagh Rd as well as teaching school. The Hollands are close friends
of Owen and later become the home away from home for Frank Beagan,
Peters younger brother. William Koughan is a neighbor of Owen and An
McCarthys sister, Eliza, is married to Owens brother Patrick.
April 11,1868 Celestine James, born the 4th is baptized to Owen Beagan and
Ann Trainor at St. Patricks. The sponsors were James Carr and Catherine
Trainor.
This James is the only one out of 11 male children born in this
generation to Owen, Patrick and John to carry the James name on, one
more hint that Owen's father was James. Another discovery later
suggests that Celestine James is actually a girl. James Carr is probably
the brother of John Carr who is married to Owens sister Margaret. Owen
is now 41, Ann is 32 and Peter is 2.
Sept.24,1868 The School Visitors' Report records the following;
School...................visit 96 Lot 35 Donagh

also necessitated to chop the firewood at the school; pupils very apathetic
regarding school necessaries throughout; ten days lost last winter for
want of a supply of fuel.
The report continues on the overall condition of schools on the
Island and explains the ratings of teachers and salaries paid them. Owen
receives 55 lbs per annum.
March 21,1869 Francis Patrick, born on March 12th, to Owen Beagan and Ann
Trainor is baptized at St. Patricks and sponsored by Justin and Mary
McCarthy.
This is Frank Beagan who is believed to be the first Beagan to immigrate
to the U.S. In a later census he is found living in East Boston with his older
brother Peter. Justin McCarthy is the brother of Eliza McCarthy, who has
married Owens brother Patrick. Mary is believed to be Justins wife, Mary
MacDonald. Owen is 42, Ann is 33 and Peter is 3.
1827-1890 Owen and his threes sons farmed his 50 acres"- "Patrick lived on
the 50 acres he inherited from his father. He acquired another 50 acres in
Johnston's River, possibly from his father-in-law when he married Eliza
McCarthy in 1854. he later bought another 78 acres on the Donagh Rd. in
Johnston's River.". Tom and Doreen Beagan family history.
Despite the above I havent found any evidence that anyone beside
Lucius Owen and John Thomas ever farmed after Owen and Ann died.
May 2,1869 Owen Beagan and Ann Trainor are the sponsors to the baptism
of Bridget Ann Began, born April 17th to Patrick Beagan and Eliza
McCarthy at St. Patrick's. pp Rev. Thomas Phelan.
Owen is now 42 , Ann is 33 and Peter is 3. Patrick is assumed to be
Owens brother and Peters uncle.
1870 McAlpine's P.E.I. Directory of lot 35 lists Owen Beagan of Donagh
as a school teacher. Patrick Beagan as a farmer and Owen McAvinne as
a farmer.

My best guess is that Owen McAvinne is the father of Cecilia Mac
Avinnia who married Owens brother John. Owen is now 43, Ann is 34
and Peter is 4.
May 11,1871 Elizabeth is baptized to Patrick Beagan and Eliza McCarthy at
St. Patricks. The sponsors were Owen Beagan and Catherine McDonald.
I dont know if Catherine MacDonald is Owens older sister who
married Patrick MacDonnell, or she may be a sister of Pat MacDonnell.
Owen is now 44 and Peter is 5.
June 18,1871 John Thomas ( my grand-father), is baptized by Owen Beagan
and Ann Trainor at St. Patrick's. The sponsors were James Trainor and
Elizabeth Trainor. pp A. McDonald.
James and Elizabeth would be Anns brother and sister. Owen is
now 44 , Ann is 35, Peter would be 5.

Nov.9,1873 Catherine Ann, born November 1st to Owen Beagan and Ann
Trainor, is baptized. The sponsors were James Trainor and Catherine
Gormley.
This is the first Catherine Ann born to Owen and Ann, she dies 2
years later. James Trainor would be Peters uncle and Catherine Gormley
is a neighbor. Owen is 46, Ann is 37 and Peter is 7.
1874 lakes maps show Owen and his brother Patricks land on Donagh Rd
in lot 35.
This map shows for the first time Patrick and Owen on two
seperate 50 acre farms.

1875 "Catherine Ann died 1875 ET 2." Taken from the east side of a 4
cornered stone in Ft. Augustus cemetery by Alvin Beagan.
There is no record of what Catherine died of but every family in the
area suffered the loss of children at a early age. Owen would be 48, Ann
39 and Peter age 9.
April 26,1876 The 2nd Catherine Ann, born April 15 to Owen Beagan and Ann
Trainor, is baptized at St. Patricks. The sponsors this time are John and
Catherine McNally.
John and Catherine McNally are neighbors. Owen is now 49, Ann
is 40 and Peter is 10.
Sept.29,1876 Owen Beagan is a witness to the will of James Trainor.
James Trainor is Peters uncle, the brother of his mother Ann.
Nov.1,1877 Rent roll of lot 35 records Owen's rent of the 7 acres marsh of
$6.49 and rent of 48 1/2 acre farm of $9.46 is pd up. Patrick's rent on his
48 1/2 acre farm is $9.46 and also Pd. up. Both are noted to have
received their land by will. Their neighbors, the amount of rent, acreage,
how they received the land and the date its pd up to follows:
James H. Camonsky $12.61 70 1/2 lease 1 Nov 77

Feb.24,1878 Ann's mother; "Owen's wife Catherine died at the age of 96 at
Johnston's River. History of the Trainor Family on Prince Edward Island 1839 - 1992,
by Reg G. Trainor.
This is a reference to Peters maternal grandmother. Peter would
be 12 years old and Ann is 42.
July 6,1878 Mary Beagan was confirmed at St. Patricks. The sponsor was
Mrs. B. Callahan. B1 p147
July 14,1878 Bernard Callahan sponsored the following boys for confirmation
at St. Patricks; John Francis Duffy, John McAvinia, James McKenna,
Philip Duffy, Francis McKenna, and Martin Koughan. On the same day
Mrs. Callaghan sponsored the following girls; Mary Duffy, Mary Beagan,
Agnes McKenna, Bridget Duffy, John Duffy, Mery Began , Mary Ann
Trainor, Bridget McKenna, Mary Trainor, Ellen Duffy, Susan McKenna,
and Alice McKenna. The Rev. A. J. McDonald performed the sacraments.
Page 147
All of the above children are cousins of Peter, I wonder why he is
not listed? He would be 12 if we use 1866 as his birth date. Perhaps the
date on his naturalization papers is correct and he is only 11. From this
point on Ill assume he was born in 1867 rather than 1866.
1878 Mary J. died 1878 ET 14." Taken from the north side of a 4 cornered
stone in Ft. Augustus cemetery by Alvin Beagan.
Dec.11,1878 Owen Beagan and Ann Trainor's daughter "Mary Jane died
fortified with the last sacraments of the church and on the 17th last her
remains were interred in the cemetery of St. Patrick's Church, Ft.
Augustus." St. Patrick's register.
This refers to Peters older sister Mary Jane. This is the third child
Owen and Ann have lost that we know of.
1880 Meechum's Atlas shows Owen and Ann's farm of 50 acres on
Donagh Rd. in lot 35.
The Donagh school where Owen taught is still shown on the map
but we dont see any further mention of him teaching.
March 15,1880 Lucius Owen , son of Owen Beagan and Ann Trainor is
baptized. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Creighan are the sponsors.
The Creightons live on Tarantum Rd. , East of the Beagan farm. Its the
first time god-parents outside of Donagh have appeared. Owen is now 53,
Ann is 44 and Peter is 13.
1881 The census of lot 35 now shows only 2 to have been born in Ireland,
There is no sign of the Peter Beagan, blacksmith, as listed in the 1861
census. Owen is now listed as age 54, a farmer, Ann is 47, Margaret is
20, Bridget is 18 and works as a dress-maker, Peter is 15, Francis Patrick
is 12, John Thomas my grandfather is 10, Catherine Ann is 5, and Lucius
Owen is 1 years old.
Once again the ages dont match up with later info.
1883 Anne's father; "Owen Trainor continued to reside at Johnston's
River until his death. The following article appeared on page 3 of the
Examiner, February 16,1883:
The death occurred at Johnston's River on February 11 of Owen
Trainor, native of Donagh Parish, County Monaghan, Ireland, town land of
Rarutagh, immigrated 1839 with family of 9 children. Seven still living. He
has 19 grandchildren and 61 great grand children." History of the Trainor Family on
Prince Edward Island 1839 - 1992, by Reg G . Trainor
Feb.11,1883 Anne's father; Owen Trainor died fortified with the last
sacrements of the church and on the 13th inst. his remains were intered in
the cemetary of St. Patrick's church.
Owen Trainor was Peters maternal grandfather, one of the original
settlers of Donagh. Peter is 17 using the 1881 census.
.
March 31,1883 Owen Beagan and Owen McAvinia are named executors and
with Patrick Gormley are witnesses to the will of Michael Handrahan.
Owen McAvinnia is believed to be the father of Peters aunt,
Cecelia McCabe (McAvinnia). Patrick Gormley and Michael Handrahan
were neighbors of the Beagans in Donagh. Owen would now be 56.

1930 "I went to live with my older cousin Joe in Waltham. He was a plumber and
probably in his 40's. I enrolled in Waltham High School as a sophomore. Cousin
Joe got married and opened a plumbing business on Main St. in Waltham. One
night Joe came home drunk and when he saw me asleep balaky in bed he accused
me of sleeping with his wife. Evelyn had come to Waltham to rent an apartment
and I moved in with her for my Junior year. Evelyn than took a job at a nursing
home in Cambridge which included a small room. She let me sleep in the attic."

My mother told me my father bought two houses side by side and let my grandfather & grandmother live in one & us in the other. He moved them to Waltham to be with us. than he got my grandfather the store. Just a little one like a corner grocer. He used to make a great big pot of fudge & cut it up and sell it by the piece. If you notice he was wearing a eyeshade, because his best business was a parlor game in the back room. The small round picture is me in front of the store. As you can see I wasent very old, but I spent most of my time in that store & and I remember taking the dime or penny for some candy from people, because he was in back. When I was a baby, my mother said my father would be going out to work, and he would stand outside the window making all kinds of crazy things while my mother held me & I wouldnt even look at him. I only looked at my grandfathers window to see the shade go up. Than I was happy and kicking& smiling & he would come over & take me out. The only one that could push me in the carriage (even when they put the hood to the back so I couldnt see ) was my grandfather and my mother. I spent every vacation and weekend at his house in Brighton, because needless to say, the store folded and he missed Oak Square. He used to take me to the little park in Oak Square & sit with all the old men there & they would give me a nickle to give to aome guy who sat parked in a car & tell him 352 or 409. The nigger pool! He would walk from Oak Square to Newton & he would mow lawns in those big houses that had like 3 terraces of lawn. With a hand mower & and I would help him rake. He also made beautifull rock gardens for them. None of those people ever asked if we would like a drink of water. One would let him pick goose-berries (ugh) to take home. Then He started working for Pete in the Hereford St. Garage. I used to go there with him. All they did there was to play cards too. It was mostly a storage garage for big cars people left there. I would go next door to the stable for the Mounted Police. They were always brushing the horses & they had a couple of monkeys who sat on the horses & picked fleas or something off them. The police were always nice & and let me get on the horse & they would take me around the yard. I dont know if they knew what went on next door. Pete had that garage because he married Hester Brodie & her father, I should say step father, because she and another girl were adopted. Anyway old man Brodie had plenty of money. He owned a big house on Oak Square. On Fanuel St. right next to the Foresters Lodge . My grandfather belonged to that and I always hear him calling me to come down and play a game of 45s. Of course I couldnt go in there. He lived on the back side of the club. All they seemed to think of was cards. Family notes from Helen Chamberlin, grand-daughter of Peter Beagan. 1/96
"One question about Annie Reynolds, Mary and Barbara say she was on the Kane side, however they can't figure out how we were so friendly with her, because the Kanes always thought Nana married beneath her-self when she married my grandfather. I remember we always went to see her in Attleboro and had a great time. She was so nice and a great cook. We all rememner she had a out house in the back yard and no bathroom. her son John was a professor at the University of Rhode Island, when he was grown up.
Poor Peter Beagan (my grandpa) never had a steady job in his life to save any money. My father bought a used truck for $50.00 & and started his own plumbing business. Then he got a new truck which I can vaguely remember because it was open in the back and it had leather curtains that you could take down to keep out the rain. I remember this because I loved rubber, and he used to have to look under the truck to see if I was under there (chewing on the tires) before he drove out. Everyone remembers that. I don't know why I did these things, but my grandpa used to take me to the car barn and we would get on the bus. this was in Waltham. We would ride to Moody St. and a little store which grew to be Grover Cronins, and we'd go in and he would buy me a package of rubber bands (when they had real rubber bands) We'd get on the next bus and ride to Newton Corner. While I'd chew on the rubber bands he would teach me the alphabet forwards and backwards. Before I went to school I could say it faster backwards than forward and I still can. we'd stay on the bus till it turned back to Waltham to the car barn. Nice day for a kid huh?" ...... "He (Joseph Beagan) sold the Waltham Plumbing supply to Moe Black & he was there for years. My grandfather wanted to move back to Brighton so they rented an apartment in Oak Square. I can tell you truly, my father, not Pete or Jim took care of his father & mother. He could not go to bed without piling us in the car and to go to Brighton to see his father and mother. Even if we only stayed an hour. He took my grandmother to a place to get a new corset every 6 mos. (when she died we found some brand new ones in her trunk (saving them for best I guess) He took (her) regularly to have her toe-nails cut & her hair. She had beautiful white hair.
Margaret Beagan was also Uncle Frank's (Peter's Brother) cousin and Frank Beagan had settled in Sommerville when he first came here from PEI. he later, much later moved to Oak Square. Letter from Helen Chamberlain 5/97
