The 10 numbers in the beginning of each person is their social security number. It's a combination between birth year/month/day and social security numer (the four last numbers). There is a way of telling if male or female by looking at their social security number, the 9th numer is for male 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 and for female 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0. Please note that dates are recorded Day/Month/Year, (7/8 1975 is August 7, 1975). They are all listed with the last name they had at time of death. The years that are noted with Kyrkobokf. and Mant.skr. don't nessesery means the year they moved there, but it indicates that they have lived there at least since that year. For the period 1968-1972 they are listed with social security number, date of death and parish, date of marriage/widow/widower/divorse, but no names, the record was for statistics and the names and addresses were removed. (the year 1968 is not complete 25% are missing, in the year of 1971 the month December is missing). For the period 1973-1977, full name, social security number, date, parish and county of birth, date, parish and county of death, place of domicile, dates of marriage/widow/widower/divorse, no address. For the period 1978-1992, full name, social security number, date, parish and birth, date, parish and county of death, place of domicile, full address. For the period 1993-1996, full name, social security number, date, parish and county of death, full address. The registry ends at October 29, 1996. USA is divided into states. States are divided into counties and so on. Sweden is divided into 24 la:n, each one has one landsho:vding (governor?) A la:n is divided into kommuner (communities). There is another ground of classification for the church, but - as a rule - one community is one or a number of parishes.

My church registration place is the parish, where I live. Birth is registered in the parish where the mother is living when giving birth, regardless where the birth took place. Rolf Brodin brodin@arvika.mail.telia.com

Assuming your years are before 1895, I would go to a FHC and look at the FHLC (Family History Library Catalog, essentially the catalog to the big library in Salt Lake City) and go to the "locality index" for your place names. This will list the records available for those areas. If your place names don't find anything try Sko:llersta (most parishes coincide with kommun boundries). Failing that, look at your map and hopefully it has churches marked. Then try to find your family on the Clerical Survey (husfo:rho:rsla:ngd). If you do not have it, get a copy of the SWEDEN research outline from the FHC (or order it from Salt Lake library). I just bought on for a friend for 75 cents. It gives good starter instructions.Lynn Anderson lmanderson@lacad.org

Names and Mariages; There are several different traditions, varying in time and by region. One common type of tradition is that of naming a child after a recently dead relative (grandparent, sibling etc). The myth behind this was of course that the dead person in some way lived on through the child. Sometimes (in certain areas) you could guess that grandpa must have died, because a child got his name! But usually this is not a fixed rule. There is a lot to say about the history of given names. During the 19th cty there were numerous "new" names coming to use (sometimes very old ones actually). The romantic era had influence, people started to read books and newspapers etc. In the 18th cty and before the names were often very few, but if you find an unusual one check carefully - there can be a local tradition! I have found names like Alexander or Zacharias among the abundant Per, Sven, Nils and Lars - only to find that there are five or ten of them in the same parish.

Very seldom you can find names directly related to the order of birth (I have seen Ottia for the eighth child - 8 = a*tta). 'Stockholm marriages' was the name for relationships that could be very stable, but not blessed by the church. Church never gained full control everywhere.

After the end of the 1700s the church was forbidden to enquire too strongly about the fatherhood of a child out of wedlock. This was because to many tragedies happened with children being hidden away and murdered by desperate mothers. Birth control and abortion were very rare (even if they used herb medicine and known techniques).

Marrying also costed money. And one had to show proof of paid tax. An American relative of mine who is a Catholic noted the same thing as you have done and expressed it this way: To Catholics nothing is really sinful except sex. To Lutherans almost everything is a sin except sex!

A message from Elinor, THe only Dolly I remember is Arthur Holmes youngest sister. Rudolph is the son of Anna, Aunty Munda's oldest daughter. From a letter from Alice Anderson Holmes:

Sept. 24, 1893 I have a "Aron Karlsson" and a "Albertina Josefina Gustafsdotter" married on 24 Sep 1893 and living on Lundby, Valinge, Halland Sweden. I do not have the record of any of their children. Could Josefine Karlsdotter be their dotter? It is my understanding that Swedes were supposed to change from the "patronymics" system during the late 1800's and I do not know what surname the children took. Thks. Glenn PHHJ05A@prodigy.com
