1675 "William MOULAIN (Could be other variations on spelling such as Moulam) born about 1675 married Elizabeth unknown surname, ?born about the same time. She died about 1746 possibly in Dewlish, where she was possibley born. Their children were: John born 1701, Dewlish / Willaim born 1704, Dewlish / Frances 1709, Delish / Ann 1712 (my ancestor) Dewlish married James Vincent 1733 Dewlish. / Thomas 1715, Dewlish / Mary 1718 Dewlish, died 1719, Dewlish.

John VINCENT/VYNCENT born about 1670 had a son Edward about 1700. No spouses known for either of these men. Information not verified. Edward had a son James in 1715 who married Ann Moulain in 1733 in Dewlish. Their children were: Sarah, born 1735, ?single mother died 1823 Dewlish / Anne 1737, Dewlish died 1753 Dewlish / Mary 1740, Dewlish / James 1743 Dewlish married Betty Hewes 1764 Dewlish, died 1827 Dewlish / Benjamin 1749 Dewlish married Jane ?surname who died and then married his / cousin Mary Vincent between 1776 and 79. Mary and Benjamin had one son George in 1779. My direct ancestors, before Mary died in 1780. Ann, born 1755, Dewlish / Benjamin and Mary's son George born in Dewlish, married Sarah Bagg/Begg born approx 1770 ?where. No information about her so far. Would love something on her. She died in 1835 in Dewlish. George died in 1850 in Victoria Australia. Their children were: Benjamin died USA / George / James died Newfoundland, Canada / Isaac married Elizabeth Shorti Vincent and died Wagga Wagga, NSW, Australia / Elizabeth married Samuel Brown / Absolam / Jonathon married Susannah Hayward / Mary / Jacob married Mary Elizabeth Brett (my direct ancestors) and emigrated to Australia. I have alot of information about their life in Australia if anyone is interested. I am happy to share it. They became a pioneering family in Victoria and Isaac and Elizabeth did very well in NSW. All the above children were born in Dewlish

George Britt married Jane ?surname. He was born about 1730 and did about 1825 in Dewlish. Jane was buried about 1771 or 1789, Dewlish. Their children were all born in Dewlish. Samuel Brit / George Britt/Brett married Sarah / Susannah Brit / Hannah Brit / Susannah Brit / David Drake Brit (interesting as his younger brother married a Drake) / Henry Britt/Brett married Sarah Drake, parents of Mary Elizabeth Brett who married Jacob Vincent.

James Vincent apparently drowned off the coast of Newfoundland but I don't know when. Intesting his youngest brother, Jacob, married Mary Elizabeth Brett from Dewlish and 4 of her brothers settled in Newfoundland, I think near the sea. Margot Alice Springs Australia

1748 "the threat of further attacks was sufficient for the French to build a garrison at Forteau around 1710. At this time the French used Forteau three months a year as a fishing station for the Brittany-based migratory fishing fleet. Forteau was second only to Blanc Sablon in this respect, with about a dozen ships annually visiting the port from 1700 to 1760. The first granting of the Baye-Forteau concession apparently did not take place until 1748, when Adrien Desmarais VINCENT was given fishing rights for nine years." Decks Awash B. Pederson

1750 "... to summon John Pike, who was charged with cruelly whipping David Careen and Michael Moreen... ordered to pay L100 [100 pounds] to Amos Vincent, (See map) whose fish he had seized illegally." From "A History of Newfoundland" by D.W. Prowse, Q.C. (1972): At Harbour Grace, about 1750 - [Don't have the book here now, so this is kind of vague or incomplete, but thought you'd like to know there was a VINCENT around Harbour Grace in 1750]: Barbara Pederson

The other letter is to the same Harbour Grace magistrates, about their neglect to summon John Pike, who was charged with cruelly whipping David Careen and Michael Moreen. Pike, after a sharp reprimand from Rodney to the magistrates, appeared before the court on the 25th of September. He was fined £ 25 sterling and costs in Careen and Moreen's cases, and ordered to pay £ 100 to Amos Vincent, whose fish he had seized illegally.

1771 "Hi Allan, I have found a little more on the Brett family from Dewlish who went to Newfoundland. Two brothers Samuel Drake Brett and I think a David Drake Brett went to Moretons Cove area. Samuel married Rosannah Randall and believe the Randall/Randell family may have come from Christchurch in Dorset. Samuel and Rosannah Brett had a large family and I have a copy of their tree. Is this any use to you? I think some of their descendants are still living in Moretons Cove but I have been corresponding with one in America. Anything you have on the Moretons Cove area would be of interest. I have not been able to prove which part of the Vincent family came to Newfoundland but I suspect it was a James and Benjamin born in Dewlish in about 1771 and 1774. These two men were half brothers of my g.g.g. grandfather George Vincent who came to Australia. Their mother died in childbirth and the father married again so maybe there was conflict and the brothers decided to emigrate. The Vincents are very difficult to sort out as there were so many of them, all with the same Christian names. Carol Wood Brisbane Qld Australia carolwoo@netspace.net.au

1792 "Regarding your Mary Ann VINCENT married in Newfoundland in 1821, the following records from St Lawrence parish, Norwich, Norfolk, England, may be of interest: St Lawrence, Norwich

These children were baptized to William & Mary VINCENT (nee Blofield)

2-9-1792 William born 28-8

23-11-1794 Henry born 17-11

17-9-1797 Edmund Blofield born 15-9

25-12-1799 Rebecca born 21-12

14-9-1800 Mary Ann born 11-9

It looks promising but I would be reluctant to pin too much hope in this. Mary Ann VINCENT. VINCENT is a common name in Norfolk and Suffolk (collectively known as East Anglia) and so is Mary Ann. If any of the other names pop up in your tree it might be more promising. BTW, in Victorian England, many Mary Ann's went by the name of Polly." Regards Richard Rix rixrevs@interhop.n

1803 e-mail received - Dear Mr. Cole:

I note with interest your Newfoundland connections and was wondering if you had ever come across one of my ancestors. I have a James Vincent baptised in Dewlish, Dorset in 1803 who is supposed to have drowned off the coast of Newfoundland as an adult. I realise this is very vague but this is all I have ever known of him. He had one brother Benjamin who died in America and two brothers who came to Australia in 1839 and 1841 and I am descended from them. There was quite a tribe of Vincents in Dewlish in the 18th and 19th centuries. If you happen to come across a James drowning off the coast of Newfoundland I would be grateful for any information. End of e-mail. Thomas R Cole tommy@pathcom.com

Hi Allen,

>I was not the author of that (above) email, although I would love to know who was as it sounds as though he/she were descendants of one of the Australian families. We are having a Vincent family reunion in March this year of any Vincent/Begg(bagg)/Brett families. I would love to talk to them. 4 Brett brothers from Dewlish went to Newfoundland and stayed. I have managed to get in contact with Lloyd Brett a descendant of one of those brothers, if anyone is interested. I am very keen to hear any thing you come across. Cheers Margot Alice Springs NT Australia margotd@topend.com.au

1805 " I don't have anything much on Jersey at all, except that Demas Vincent from Dewlish had a daughter Amelia born on St Heliers in about 1805. It was Demas Vincents other daughter Elizabeth, for whom we can find no baptism, who married her second cousin Isaac Vincent, brother of my Jacob, and they came to Australia. Demas Vincent seems to have had a strong link to General John Michel from Dewlish House. General Michel, and later his son Field Marshall Michel, both served in the British Army and were at some stage stationed on Jersey. I don't know anything at all about a Joseph Vincent. Most of my Vincents were agricultural labourers and I was not aware of any strong Army connections. General Michel had a son who came to Australia, I think he was a black sheep and came as a remittance man (someone who was paid to stay away to prevent disgrace to the family). Isaac Vincent came on the same ship as Henry Michel and Isaac became the licensee of an hotel Henry Michel built in inland NSW. Dewlish House eventually passed to the Montmorency family. I think the Montmorencys were Irish nobility but don't know a lot about them. Viscountess Montmorency lived in Dewlish house until she died in her 90s in 1936 and it went to her unmarried daughter as the other sons were killed in the Boer War and First World War leaving no children. It became too much for her to maintain and was sold to Anthony Boyden, the owner of one of the America's Cup yachts. Carol Wood Brisbane Qld Australia carolwoo@netspace.net.au

William Vincent and Catherine b. 1819 Swyer were my 3rd great grandparents, from Sandy Point on the west coast of Newfoundland. 1808 "According to Patricia Thornton (1981) Charles Paine arrived from England in 1808 to fish at Cow Head. He was joined by Charles Vanson (England), E. Jardin and Moses Young (Canada) and James Droyill (France) in 1837. Thornton theorizes that ``It is likely. .. these families centralized for the herring fishery and for shelter in the winter, but dispersed along the coast in the summer each to fish a salmon river.'' The first census of Cow Head, taken in 1857, showed fifty-five people; by 1873 the community had grown to sixtyseven, composed of the families of Charles Benoit, Charles Paine (Payne), M. Huelin, Charles Vincent, William Hutchins, John Benoit, and John Paine (nc: 1873). John Pelley, a furrier, was the first livyer at Cow Head according to Maxwell Brown (n.d.), and John or Charles Paine (or both) from Christ Church, England, who settled in Cow Head via Burin around 1808, was listed as trading with T.S. *Bird and Company qv for many years." http://enl.cuff.nf.ca/entry/27/2799.htm

1819 "Hi Mr. Began, . Grinelda Knight married my great grandmother's brother. For a while now I was sure that my 3rd great grandmother was Catherine Dennis from Sandy Point who married William Swyer. I'm now told that she was Catherine Vincent b. abt. 1819. According to what I've read, William and Margaret Vincent moved to the Bay St. George area abt. 1850. My question is who is Charles Vincent from England mentioned in the 1808 Thomas White "census" of Sandy Point? Is he connected to the later Vincents in the area? Thank you.

Yes, I meant to say Mary Ann Vincent Shaw and William Vincent were sister and brother. Samuel Swyer and Catherine had several children and they show up on the Sandy Point baptism records as Sawyer, that is an error it should have been Swyer. I'm still not entirely sure she was a Vincent, if she was I suspect she was the daughter of Charles who lived there in the early 1800's, well before William's family moved there. 1820's Triton, believed to have been settled in the 1820's, the town received its name from the Triton, a ship that once anchored in its harbour. Passengers and crewmen from this vessel decided to stay ashore in this safe haven. The first area of the community to be inhabited was Vincent's Point in Triton East. This region was named after William Vincent , one of the early residents. It is uncertain who the actual early residents were, but reports indicate that Moses Jenkins, Arthur Linfield,, and Ozzie Roberts were also among the first to arrive. 1830 John Vincent, baptized at Cape Island (Bonavista B.), 1830, aged 18; "Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland" by E.R. Seary /Barbara Pederson

1830 My cousin provided me with a huge tree on the Vincent family that contains some narrative material as well. I beleive it was prepared by Mr. Clifford Andrews, who I don't know but who has done a tremendous amount of work on families in the area around Wesleyville (N. Bonavista Bay) The narrative is entitled The Vincents of Cape Island and Cobbler's In it, he states "there seems to be very little doubt that John and George Vincent, both of Cape Island, were brothers" * * *" Sometime after 1830, for reasons unknown, George Vincent and his family, left Cape island and relocated to Cobbler's Island" * * * "I BELEIVE THAT THE JOHN AND GEORGE VINCENT OF CAPE ISLAND WERE THE SONS OF THE JOHN VINCENT OF TWILLINGATE AND FOGO AND THAT THEY CAME TO CAPE ISLAND AROUND 1810, BY WAY OF GREENSPOND. THE ENGLISH BUSINESS FiRM OF SLADE AND CO HAD BRANCH OPERATIONS IN BOTH FOGO AND GREENSPOND AND THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN FREQUENT COMMUNICATIONSBETWEEN THE TWO COMMUNITIES." Hope this helps Jim Tuffin Wantagh, NY

Hi Allen, actually Clifford Andrews, a Wesleyville area historia made the contact between George and John. His book has the following information in the begining:"In 1830, following the arrival of the first permanent clergyman at Greenspond, the Rev. A.N. Coster, John Vincent, of Cape Island had George, Honor, Hannah, and Joseph re-baptized, along with other children of his family. In 1830, the ages of the children were given as follows in years-- George 19, Honor 17, Hannah 15, Mary 13, Joseph 9, William 5, Rebecca 3.. In the same year, that is, 1830, on June 30, Maria, wife of George Vincent, had three of her children baptized, with the ages given as follows, in years -- William 6, Harriett 3, Elizabeth 1. There seems to be very little doubt that John and George Vincent, both of Cape Island, were brothers.

It is interesting to note that the eldest son of the two families, that is John of John and Richard of George, was not baptized with other members of the families.

Sometime after 1830, for reasons unknown, George Vincent and his family, left Cape Island and relocated to Cobbler's Island, about a quarter mile south of the Cape."

" Slade's Mercantile Records, NF Archives, record that John and Joseph Vincent were "servant" fishermen at Twillingate -- John for the years 1786 to 1792 and Joseph for the yars 1791 and 1792.......John was a platner at Fogo in 1808.....John and Joseph were, I believe brothers, and it is very probable that Joseph may not have come back...after 1792. It is certain that he did not go to Cape Island with John since there are no references to him in any of the Bonavista Bay records. It is interesting to note that later, at Cape Island, the name Joseph, was given to one of the Vincent boys born in 1823." "I believe that the John and George Vincent of Cape Island were the sons of the John Vincent of Twillingate and Fogo and that they came to Cape Island around 1810, by way of Greenspond. The English business firm of Slade and Co. had branch operations in both Fogo and Greenspond and there would have been frequent communications between the two communities."

1830 According to family records William Vincent was born in 1830 and I think died in 1910. Ann was his wife's name who orginated from Twilligate. William Vincent married Ann Kates from Twilligate and moved to three Arms, than to Vincent's Point. John Vincent was their son. they are recorded as living in Vincent's Point in 1845. William Vincent had several sons and daughters including my gr-gr-grandfather William John Vincent (usually called John). His son Norman Vincent is my gr-grandfather. Its weird because everything I thought was true about my ancesters are false. I amlways thought that William came directly from England but reecords show that he lived in Three Arms after marrying his wife Ann Kates and than moved to Vincent's Point. I don't know if he landed in St. John's first and than moved. Janice Vincent vincent@uoguelph.ca

The only part that is not clear to me is how William and Ann Kates could be listed in Vincent's Point in the 1845 census. William would only be 15 years old and not married yet. I wonder if that may not be the William Vincent that married Margaret Shaw or perhaps the William Vincent Branch Pilot M. Annie ? b.1821 d.1876 St.John's. My vote would be for the latter and the latter may even be your William Vincent! I'll leave the above on my web page in hopes someone else can add to it. Allen

1830 "pop. 1945, 102). A small island off the eastern tip of Cape Freels qv at the northern entrance to Bonavista Bay, Cape Island was probably settled in the late 17s as fishermen and trappers moved from Bonavista and Greenspond qqv to the islands off the Cape and to Fogo Island and into Notre Dame Bay. Cape Island was reported in the Census 1836 with a population of 100 (mainly Church of England with a few Roman Catholic families) in eleven houses. E.R. Seary (1976) reports a John Vincent baptized at Cape Island in 1830.

The population of Cape Island fluctuated as families from the mainland moved to the island to fish in the summer and as Cape Island families left the island for mainland locations. In 1857 Cape Island numbered sixty-nine inhabitants and by 1891 it had risen to 103. The population stayed at that level until the community was abandoned between 1948 and 1950 when families moved to Newtown qv, Bonavista Bay to take advantage of the services (church, school, mercantile) in that community, whose population was made up primarily of settlers from islands in Bonavista Bay. Encyclopedia of newfoundland and Labrador http://enl.cuff.nf.ca/entry/22/2242.htm

1830's "It appears that Little Triton Harbour (or Triton East) was the earliest area of settlement, in the 1830s or 1840s, but it is likely that both Little Triton Harbour and Big Triton Island (which shelters the harbour) were earlier used as seasonal fishing stations by crews from the Twillingate area. Triton first appears in the Census in 1845, with a population of 17. This number probably includes the families of Robert Winsor (from Tilt Cove qv) and William Vincent (from Twillingate, via Three Arms qv). Other early family names of Triton include Jenkins, Newman, Purchase, Roberts and Williams. There were also a few families who lived southeast of the harbour, where off-lying islands form sheltered tickles close to the major fishing grounds in the area: the Simms family at Nimrod qv and the Henstridges at Great Denier Island. Both families eventually moved into Triton. Encyclopedia Of Newfoundland http://enl.cuff.nf.ca/entry/83/8335.htm

I am just beginning a project I have been putting off for a long time (about 30 years). That is about how long I have been collecting a patchwork of family history data. The name and family line I am concerned with is Phillip Messervey (I think this is the correct spelling) who emigrated from the Channel Islands to Newfoundland sometime during the late 17th or early 18th century. He would be my ?gggg?grandfather. My mother's ((Clarissa June Nelson (nee Butt) b. 1932 d. 1982)) father's (Fredrick Solomon Butt b. 188? d. 1962) side.

It is said he was a wealthy landowner who sold his Channel Island holdings to the British Crown. I was told he was an early if not founding settler of St. George's, Newfoundland. His Daughter married a British naval officer or privateer with the last name of Vincent who also settled in the St. George's Bay area.

I am running into problems due to a church fire in the 1970s which destroyed a good portion of my family's birth and death records. Thus I am depending on some family oral history concerning this portion of my family history.

Thank you in advance for any help you good folks can provide me. Kevin J. Nelson Grand Rivers, Kentucky, USA MSGTK@prodigy.net

King's Cove

(pop. 1956, 18). An abandoned fishing and logging community in Notre Dame Bay on the Green Bay side of the promontory separating Western Arm from Green Bay. King's Cove first appears in the 1857 Census, with a population of 44. The population reached its peak of 51 in 1874.

Lovell records six families living in the community: Samuel and William Austry, William England, George Piewood, James and William King. The community name probably comes from the family name, which was common in the area. There is no record of a school or church in the community. In 1956, when King's Cove last showed up in the Census, there were four men in the community, employed as loggers. See HARRY'S HARBOUR." http://enl.cuff.nf.ca/entry/52/5277.htm

"After 1815 the grounds of western Notre Dame Bay were being fished by vessels out of Twillingate, who came to frequent the three arms. The most favoured anchorage was at Middle Arm, in the tickle between Three Arms Island and the mainland. In 1838 John and William Wells of Back Harbour, Twillingate built a fishing room on Three Arms Island for the summer fishery. Then, in 1841, John Wells moved his household to Three Arms. In short order others followed, including Solomon Strong (who subsequently married Wells' sister), the family of William Vincent of Twillingate and James Norris, an Irishman. Three Arms first appears in the Census in 1845, with a population of 29.

By the next Census, in 1857, the population had reached 58. Wells had built up his premises to a small mercantile establishment, which employed a small schooner to trade with fishermen in western Notre Dame Bay and built fishing boats under the direction of Strong. By 1869 the population was 69 (including the Bartlett, Cooper, Norris, Shearing, Strong, Wells and Young families) and the Wells business had been taken over by the young James Norris qv, who had two schooners built and became involved in outfitting crews for the migratory fishery to the French Shore. By 1884 there were 102 people living at Three Arms, both on the island and at Clarke Cove on the adjacent mainland. Most of the men were employed by Norris, who eventually had three vessels for the coasting trade alone, in addition to several fishing schooners. The smaller vessels continued to be built locally, by John Rideout after Strong's eyesight began to fail, while Norris also operated a small sawmill to supply the needs of his firm. A post office was established on the mainland in 1891 and there was soon a telegraph office connecting with Little Bay (in part for the convenience of schooners fishing the French Shore and the Labrador coast, as the practice of anchoring at Three Arms during the voyage north continued) and a cart road, towards Jackson's Cove. http://enl.cuff.nf.ca/entry/82/8217.htm

Black Island, Bay of Exploits

(pop. 1956, 108). Actually a group of three islands located in the Bay of Exploits, Black Island, which is somewhat flat in appearance, is the largest of the islands; Little Black Island lies to the southeast of Black Island and is separated from it by a narrow channel of water called Black Island Tickle; Storehouse Island lies about 150 m (500 ft) off the northeast side of Black Island. The islands are heavily forested and settlement took place in three small coves on Black Island called Hamilton Cove, Sealing Bight and Kiar's (Kyers) Cove, and on both sides of Black Island Tickle, which separates Black Island and Little Black Island. Although the island is isolated, with poor harbours, its strategic position close to the fine salmon rivers which flow into the Bay of Exploits, and its situation between the commercial fishing centres of Fortune Harbour qv and Twillingate qv, made it a magnet for settlement and the island was well-established by 1845 when the first census recorded 124 people, mainly fishermen, planters and shoremen.

E.R. Seary (1976) lists a Richard Martin as a settler of Black Island in 1841 and William Potter (1842), John Baker (1843), James Snow (1844), John Dorey (1848), Josiah Pelly (1859) and Joseph Baker (1862).

Merritt's Harbour

Merritt's Harbour at various times in its history has been considered a part of the community of Herring Neck -- for years the commercial and religious centre of the eastern half of New World Island. However, the Protestant population of Merritt's Harbour (exclusively Methodist after 1900) had built its own school by 1891. Traditionally, residents received their livelihood from the inshore and Labrador cod fisheries. Family names associated with Merritt's Harbour include Card, Keats, Powell and Watkins.

Indian Islands

(pop. 1945, 141). Two formerly populated islands, Eastern Indian Island and Western Indian Island (known locally as Perry's Island). Indian Islands are located in Sir Charles Hamilton Sound off the southwest corner of Fogo Island. Tradition has it that the Indian Islands were so named because they were used as summer sites by the Beothuk.

Fishermen of Indian Islands, 1930s

The first European inhabitant was William Cull qv, who is said to have settled Eastern Indian Island c1840. The islands first appear in census records in 1845 with a population of 14 in two families. Shortly thereafter settlers began to arrive from Harbour Grace, Ochre Pit Cove, Spaniard's Bay and Western Bay. Local tradition holds that the first white child born on the island was George Perry, born in 1848 at Western Indian Island. By 1857 the population on both islands had risen to 107 and by 1869 the number had doubled. Common family names on the eastern island included Cull, Sheppard and Coish at Eastern Cove; and Collins, Hynes, Penny and Kinden at Southside (located on the north shore of the island, but on the south side of Indian Island Tickle which separates the two islands). Early inhabitants of Perry's Island included families of Perrys, Hoddinotts and Carnells. Settlement continued to expand, with the population reaching 326 in 1901 and peaking in 1921, with 86 at Perry's Island, 156 at Eastern Cove, 25 at Chalky's Cove (on the west end of the eastern island) and 166 at Southside, for a total of 433.
