TOBY

I have two dogs, Toby and Snowflake. Toby is an 8 year old chow-mix that I got from the pound when he was a puppy. Snowflake is a yellow lab that found me while I was walking through Mark Twain National Forest.

I've had dogs all my life, but just recently started paying attention to taking the best care of them possible, so I've recently started trying some new things with my dogs. I no longer feed them commercial dog food, I don't give them yearly booster vaccinations (except rabies which is required by law), and I've started click training them. I've written about all these "strange" things below.

Clicker Training

I recently started training my dogs after discovering "Clicker Training" on the web and reading "Don't Shoot the Dog!", by Karen Pryor. Clicker training uses positive reinforcement (giving treats or other good things) along with a clicker (which becomes a conditioned reinforcer) which lets you tell the animal exactly what the positive reinforcement is for. Using a clicker maker training go much faster than using positive reinforcement alone. People are training their dogs with a clicker to do obedience for dog shows, SAR (finding missing persons), agility, flyball, even police dog training. You can use it for almost everything!

It's amazing watching them learn new things, and they love being trained. I don't have to "correct them" by jerking them around by their collars, strangling them with a choke collar, or yelling at them.
