Furry's Birthday in East L.A. Run

Downtown LA is like any big city downtown when you're there--it's cavernish and dark and new and old and easy to get lost in--but when you're not just inside it, it's a desert mirage, an odd cluster of tall and taller buildings in a concentrated area, with the rest of the city sprawling outside it. These midreaches of land in which we're running today have escaped downtown "revitalization" and the Orange County Mediterranean Instant Villa Developers that have destroyed so much of our countryside, even as far away as Indonesia, leaving us with entire neighborhoods with their original charm intact. For some people, the virtual reality of a zipcode is more important than the neighborhood. This run is a trip back in time to the old L.A.
