Six Months After Part One
****

April 15th. The day that Dawson had waited for from the age of 15. Yet he was nervous. He was in his parent’s home in Capeside, and today was the day he was to marry Joey Potter. It was now 11am, three hours before the ceremony was to start, and he was scared. He sat in his childhood bedroom, trying to calm down. His insides were a mangled heap of emotions. Joy, excitement, fear, anxiety and stress all fought inside him. He decided to talk to his father.

Mitch Leery was sat in the living room, watching the news reports. His wife had quit her job shortly after their son had moved out, and she was now working on the production team. She had taken the day off work for what was one of the most important days in their lives. He looked up when he heard someone enter the room. Seeing that it was Dawson, he turned off the television set.

“Hey, husband to be! How does it feel?” he said with a smile. Dawson shrugged and sank into a chair.

“I’m nervous. Confused. Excited.”

“Completely normal,” Mitch reassured Dawson. “But this is Joey you’re marrying. You two were meant for each other.”

“I know. And I love her. I’m ecstatic that she loves me too, but I’m just so…ugh!” “What, your extensive bank of vocabulary has failed you?” Mitch joked.

“It’s just kinda weird. I don’t know how we’re gonna work as a married couple.”

“No one does, Dawson. But you two have been living together for six and a half months. You already have a daughter. What else do you need to learn?”

“We’ve been living together, but sleeping in separate rooms, Dad.”

“You mean you two haven’t…?”

“Not since Aimie was…conceived,” Dawson admitted.

“You’ll work it all out. Trust me. But it sounds to me like you’ve been living like you’re married without half the pleasures!”

“Dad!!!! Look, let’s forget I ever said anything, OK? Pacey is sooo much better at all this!” Dawson said before getting up and leaving the room.

Joey sat on the step of the porch in front of her sister’s house. Inside the house, Bessie was fussing over the two bridesmaids. Joey needed time to think. She looked out over the creek, deep in thought. Suddenly, she heard the door behind her open.

“Joey! Get your butt inside now! There’s only three hours to go, and you’re wearing jeans! Come on, get into your dress. We need to start on your hair!” Bessie said. Joey stood up, and instead of going into the house, she started to walk towards the creek. “Joey! Where do you think you’re going?” Bessie cried.

Joey ignored her, and instead got into the little boat and started to row. Although it had been years since she had last rowed, it came back easily and before long, she was traveling down the creek with Bessie calling after her.

Dawson sat on the jetty outside his house, looking across the creek. >I>I’m just being stupid, he thought to himself. Dad was right. We’ll be fine. This is Joey I’m marrying. I love her. She loves me. We have a daughter. It’s just I’m so nervous. What if something goes wrong?

He sighed, and ran his hands through his hair. When he opened his eyes again, he thought he was seeing things. He saw Joey in a little boat, heading for him. Then he realized it was her. He stood up, and smiled. She neared the jetty, and gave him the rope to tie the boat up with. He did, and then he held out a hand to help her onto the jetty. She accepted it, and stood beside him.

“Joey,” he said. She pulled him towards her, and kissed him deeply. When they pulled apart, she smiled.

“I thought you’d be sat here analyzing today to death,” she murmured. “So I thought I’d come and see you were OK.”

“I love you,” was all he could say in response.

“You’d better,” she said, before kissing him once again with all herstrength.

Gail Leery walked out of the house, looking for Dawson. She wanted to tell him that Jen had just called, and asked to come over before the wedding. As she had last seen Dawson sat on the jetty, she looked in that direction. Much to her surprise, she saw her son and Joey kissing. She smiled to herself, knowing that Dawson was a bit anxious about the whole affair, and that Joey was the only one who could calm him down. Still, she had to talk to him, so she walked over to the entwined couple. She cleared her throat, to get their attention. They jumped apart, and their faces were like guilty schoolchildren.

“Mum! We were just…” Dawson stammered. Gail laughed.

“Practicing for your cue at the alter?” she joked. “Never mind, I just came to tell you that Jen’s coming here in a few minutes. She’s just called from the freeway, and she wants to speak with you. Is that OK?” she asked, suddenly realizing that Joey might feel uncomfortable. Joey nodded.

“Sure. God, I haven’t seen her since…seven years! Anyway, I’d better go, Bessie’s mad at me. She doesn’t think I’m gonna be ready in time. See you at the church, Mr. Leery.”

“See you at the church, Mrs. Leery,” Dawson teased back. Joey got back into the boat, and began to row away. She paused, to wave smiling at Dawson and his mother.

“Come on, you. We’ve still got things to do!” Mrs. Leery scolded her son. He walked back into the house with her.

Jen pulled her coat tighter as she walked towards Dawson’s house. It was cold in the dress she was wearing. She knocked on the door, and was greeted by Dawson. Still the same old Dawson Leery, the guy she had gone out with more than ten years ago.

“Hey, long time no see!” she said, grinning.

“Jen! You look wonderful!” he said, before pulling her in for a hug. She pulled away, and they stood in awkward silence. “So, how can I help you?” Dawson asked.

“Can we talk?” Jen inquired.

“Sure. Come on in. We can go my old room, if you want.” They walked into the house and went into the room. Dawson sat on the bed, whilst Jen walked over to the window and looked out.

“I never thought that I’d come back to Capeside after Grams died,” she said slowly.

“Well, Joey and I felt it was fitting to get married here. Kinda shuts the book on that chapter of our lives,” Dawson explained.

“Talking about ending our old lives,” Jen began, “I know it’s been 12 years, but I want to apologize. Don’t interrupt. Just listen. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for how I treated you. I used you. I was so messed up, and then you came along. You seemed like the rock I needed. I recovered, and started to treat you badly. I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I know I did. I’m happy for you and Joey. All the pain I put you both though was a long time ago, but I needed to apologize. Can you ever forgive me?”

“Of course I can, Jen. You’re a friend. Thank you.” He watched as Jen broke into tears. He went toward her, to hug her again, but she wiped at her eyes and shook her head.

“I’m going now. I’ll see you at the church. Have a great time, Dawson. You deserve it.” She walked out of the room, and left the house. Dawson heard the door shut, and then a few moments later, a car pull out of theirdrive.

Joey felt her mouth drop as she looked into the mirror. It didn’t look like it could be her. The reflection was one of a sophisticated young woman, not her. The reflection was wearing a long white dress, simple yet elegant, with no sleeves. It was white satin, and was pretty without being meringue like. The reflection wore a veil on her head, and was carrying a bunch of white lilies. Her make up was simple, but looked stunning. A little mascara, eyeliner and pink lipstick set off her beautiful features, and her dark hair was tied back in a twist with a few strands lying on her face, emphasizing her cheekbones. Joey gasped at the stunning image, and went to cover her mouth with her spare hand. She was even more shocked when the hand of the image made the same motion. She twisted slightly to see her back, and then turned to face her sister Bessie.

“Oh my God! Thank you so much, Bess!” Joey squealed.

“Thank me? Whatever for, Joey? You’re beautiful. All I did was a little bit of hair and make up. I’ve always been jealous of you, never more so than now,” Bessie said, almost in tears as she looked at her little sister.

“I know I’m not beautiful, but I’m gonna feel like a princess. Thank you. I love you Bess. Thank you so much.” The sisters hugged, and then Bessie wiped at her eyes.

“Carly and Aimie are downstairs waiting for you with Bodie and Dad. Are you ready?” Bessie asked. Their father had been let out for the day to give his daughter away. He still had four years to serve of his 20 year sentence, but it meant a lot to him that he could see Joey get married.

“As ready as I’ll ever be.” Joey smiled once more in the mirror before following Bessie down the stairs.

As she turned the bend on the stairs, she caught her first glimpse of her father. His mouth dropped open as he saw her. She smiled at him, before hugging him. He had tears in his eyes as he whispered into her ear.

“You look wonderful, Jo. Just like your mother did,” he said. She pulled away, and shrugged.

“Not bad considering I almost fell off these heels on the descent of the stairs, and I’m about to smudge my makeup with tears, eh?” she joked. She looked down and saw Aimie for the first time in her bridesmaid dress. “Hey, honey! You look pretty,” she said, giving her daughter a kiss.

“So do you mummy,” Aimie said sweetly. Joey looked fondly at herdaughter.

“I suppose we’d better get going, eh? Don’t want to keep Daddy waiting!” she said breezily, hardly feeling any nerves at all.

“Hurry up, Dawson! We need to leave now!” Pacey yelled to his ex-roommate. Mitch and Gail were worrying over how long they had until the service was due to start. Dawson had shut himself in his room after Jen had left, and he had called through his door that he was fine, but they needed to leave now.

“OK. I’m ready,” he announced, bouncing down the stairs. Gail hugged him tightly.

“You look wonderful, honey,” she said. Dawson shrugged.

“Not half as good as Joey will. We both know that!” he joked. “Are you sure you’ve got the rings, Pace? Because if anything goes wrong, I will kill you!”

“I’ve got them, man. Come on!” Pacey yelled again, leaving the house. Mr. And Mrs. Leery followed, and Dawson looked around one more time before shutting the door and locking it behind him.

Dawson smiled at his new wife, and lifted her veil off her face. Then, he pulled her face close to his, and they kissed. The congregation stood and clapped enthusiastically. They ended the kiss, and hugged.

“I love you, Joey,” Dawson whispered.

“I love you too,” Joey responded. They then turned to face their friends and family. Bessie and Gail were both crying tears of happiness, whilst Bodie, Mitch and Mr. Potter stood beside them looking embarrassed. Pacey grinned at his two best friends, and Jen smiled triumphantly. Aimie ran forwards to hug her parents, and Dawson picked her up. The three of them led the others out of the church.

Dawson and Josephine Leery moved into the centre of the dance floor to have their first dance as a married couple. A ring formed round them, eager to see the two dancing. The band played the introduction to a song that had been popular when Dawson and Joey were only a few years old. It was I’ve had the time of my life, a song from the hit film Dirty Dancing. The couple moved in perfect synchrony to the music, gaining applause for some of their movements.

“Have I told you how much I love you?” Dawson asked as they moved together for the last strains of music.

“Only about a million times,” Joey replied. Then, the song finished, and the guests clapped once more. Then, the music began for another song from their childhood - Angel, by Sarah Mc Lachlan. The guests began to move into couples for the dance. Dawson and Joey joined them, sealing their marriage with another kiss.

A while later, Joey felt a tap on her shoulder. Dawson was talking to some of his friends, and she was stood talking to her friend Sophie. She turned around, and saw Jen standing behind her.

“Jen! It’s wonderful to see you!” Joey screamed, hugging her.

“You too, Jo. You look absolutely wonderful!” Jen said, smiling. The pair broke apart, and Joey introduced her two friends.

“Look, Joey, I’d better go see to the kids for a second. I’ll speak with you later, OK?” Sophie said, excusing herself. Joey turned and looked at Jen.

“I meant it, you know?” Joey started. “I really missed you.”

“Yeah, well. From what I hear, you’ve been busy these past five years!” Jen said.

“You could say that. Have you met Aimie?”

“No, not yet,” Jen replied. “I really hope that you and Dawson will be happy, Jo. I mean that. I know that when we were kids, we fought over him, but I’ve let go. He’s yours. You’re the only one he’s ever loved.”

“Thank you, Jen,” Joey stated simply before hugging Jen once more. She heard a cough behind her, and when she looked, she saw Dawson and Aimie. “Hey, you,” she said happily.

“Mummy, can I have a cuddle?” Aimie asked. Joey laughed, and picked her up.

“Aimie, this a friend of mine. Her name’s Jen. Say hello.”

“Hello Jen,” Aimie obeyed.

“Hello Aimie. You look pretty.” “I’d have to agree with you there,” Dawson agreed, as he approached the women and child. “Jo, your Dad wants a dance.”

“OK. Thanks again Jen, but I’d better go.”

“That’s all right. Have fun. And keep in touch this time!” Jen called, as Dawson and Joey made their way to the dance floor, where his mother and her father were waiting for them. Joey went up to her father, and hugged him before they started to dance. Gail and Dawson joined them.

A few songs later, Dawson and Joey took to the floor for their final dance before going off to the hotel they were staying in before their honeymoon in Miami. The song that started was another oldie, and one from another film that they had seen. The song was I don’t wanna miss a thing, and as she danced with her husband, Joey realized that every word of the song was how she felt. Despite a few setbacks, their friendship had survived intact, and Dawson was the only thing she could depend on for the rest of her life. One day, Aimie would grow up and leave home. If they had other children, they would too. But she and Dawson would always be together. Never missing a thing.
