Inspired by ‘From Here To Eternity’ by Duchess

Disclaimer - I am not connected to Dawson’s Creek in any way other than that I’m a huge fan. I do not own any of the characters, or the scenery. I don’t own any of the songs or films I make reference to. I don’t even own the basic idea for this story. I read Duchess’s great fanfic, and really wanted to write what I saw happening when they were 17. Thanks a lot for not suing me, and can I suggest that you read From Here To Eternity?

Summary - The gang are in their junior year at school, and they are all 16. Dawson and Joey decided they were better as friends, and Joey is now with Pacey. They’ve been going out since the summer, and it’s now November. Jen still hangs with the crowd, but goes on various dates with Jocks. Dawson is single, and working on his movies.

Rating - PG-13. Adult situations and bad language.

Honesty

Dawson led Pacey and Joey into the kitchen. His mother was sat at the table, reading a newspaper. She looked up and smiled at the trio. “Hey, Dawson, Joey, Pacey. How was dinner?” she asked. The three friends had eaten at the Icehouse.

“Fine,” Dawson replied. “Pacey gave us a lift back. I’ll just go get that textbook, OK? It’s in my room.”

“That’s fine, bud. Take as long as you like,” Pacey called as Dawson left the room. Gail turned back to the newspaper. Pacey took advantage of the moment by kissing Joey. He hooked his arms round her waist, pulling her closer. She was surprised at first, but soon relaxed. In the four months that they’d been dating, there had been a lot of impromptu kisses. She began to run her hands through his cropped hair, when a cough made them jump apart. Dawson had returned with the book. Joey blushed silently when she saw him there. Dawson shook his head. Pacey grinned.

“OK then. I’d better get the car back home before it’s missed,” Pacey said.

“Have a good movie night, won’t you?” he asked Joey. She nodded, and he gave her another quick kiss.

“Now go!” Joey cried, pushing him away.

“I am. See you tomorrow at your locker?”

“Sure. Make sure you know everything for the Bio test, OK?”

“Yes sir!” Pacey said, saluting. He marched out of the kitchen and out of the house. Joey began to laugh. Dawson watched her, smiling.

“What?” she asked grinning.

“I’ve never seen you as happy as you are when you’re with him,” Dawson explained.

“I don’t know, there’s just something about him…I just relax a lot more,” she tried to explain. “What movies are we gonna watch?”

“’You’ve got mail’ and ‘Jurassic Park’,” Dawson informed her. She groaned.

“Another Spielberg movie?”

“Come on, you know you love them as much as I do,” Dawson pointed out.

She smiled, and they went upstairs to his room.

Dawson paused before beginning to speak. They had watched the first movie, and were about to move on to Jurassic Park. He knew it was now or never.

“Joey?” he asked. She looked up.

“Yes?”

“Can we talk for a few moments?”

“Sure.”

“I’ve been thinking about us lately. You and me that is. Do you think we could mutate our friendship? Do you think that we can handle an adult friendship instead of a this awkward one? I know that last year, you said you didn’t need to hear everything about Jen. Do you feel differently now? We have like this unique bond, and I want us to be able to talk about anything. I want us to be totally open with each other.”

“Sure. Is there anything in particular you want to tell me?” Joey asked, raising her eyebrows.

“No. You?” he asked.

“No. Can we get on with the movie then? I’ve gotta get back home soon.” Dawson smiled, and stuck the video in the VCR.

Joey thought about her friendship with Dawson that evening as she got into bed. She was happy that they had agreed to talk about anything. She knew that Pacey was close to Dawson, and that she’d be able now to ask about him. She knew that she’d never feel as shut out as she did when Jen appeared in Dawson’s life. And she wouldn’t have to hide any of her feelings. She could be completely honest with Dawson. He knew her so well that he’d be able to help her if she needed his advice. For the past year, there’d been an invisible wall between them as they tried to cope with their imposing adulthood. If that wall was destroyed, it could only be good. She smiled to herself as she drifted off to sleep, completely happy.

Dawson groaned inwardly at the sight of his two best friends making out in the corridor at school the next morning. Whilst he was happy that they had each other, he didn’t need to see them have each other. However, he was making his friendship with Joey better, and he and Pacey were still close. Now that they didn’t hate each other, it made his life a lot easier. Still, there were things bugging him about their relationship. He felt excluded from this secret world they shared. That was partly why he had asked for complete honesty with Joey. He knew he’d be able to get information about his friends. He neared the couple who were oblivious to his presence.

“That’ll be detention for you both!” he called out to them. They both pulled away, and looked at him. Pacey frowned.

“Dawson! Can’t you see I don’t need to be disturbed? I was getting some lip from my woman!”

“Your woman?” Joey asked, pretending to be offended.

“Yes. My woman. Got any arguments with that?” Pacey asked, smiling at her. Her stern face she’d put on cracked as she smiled.

“No, my man.”

“Good. Come here,” Pacey invited, pulling her in for another kiss. Dawson pulled a face, and opened his locker. Eventually, they pulled apart.

“K, I’ve gotta run. I need to speak to Mike about the English Assignment,” Pacey explained. “See you later, Jo. See you third period, D-Man!” Pacey ran off down the hall. Joey turned back to her locker, and started to pull out books. Dawson continued to fiddle around in his locker.

“You know what we said last night about being honest, Jo?” he asked.

“Yeah?”

“Are you sleeping with Pacey?”

“What?” Joey asked, turning to face Dawson.

“You heard. I’m not judging, I just asked.”

“No, we’re not sleeping together yet, Dawson,” Joey stated.

“Has he asked you?”

“No, not yet. But every day, I know we’re getting closer to the inevitable. We haven’t gone very far yet, but it’s not gonna be long. Why?”

“I wanted to know, that’s all. I kinda feel like I’m left out. Pacey won’t tell me any of this stuff because it’s you, and he doesn’t think he should be bragging.”

“Good. He shouldn’t. But being honest, I’m kinda frightened that I don’t match up to Tamara. It’s gonna be hard living up to anyone’s shadow, but to a 35 year old woman’s? I’m as scared as hell!”

“Well, you shouldn’t be,” Dawson consoled her. “He loves you.”

“He hasn’t told me that,” Joey pointed out.

“Well it’s obvious. And you love him too.” Joey smiled at Dawson.

“I think I’m gonna like this adult relationship,” she said, suddenly pulling him into a hug. The bell went just as she pulled away, signaling the beginning of homeroom. Dawson and Joey joined the mass of pupils hurrying so they wouldn’t be late.

Joey fiddled with her skirt. Pacey noticed this, and looked at her, puzzled. They were on the couch in Bessie’s house, revising for a test on Spanish verbs the next day, but Joey’s mind was obviously elsewhere.

“OK, what’s up?” Pacey asked. Joey’s head snapped up, and she looked surprised.

“What do you mean?” she asked, trying to be casual.

“Well, you’ve not answered the question, you’re playing with your clothing and you have that weird look on your face,” Pacey listed. “Either you’ve gone back to being seven, or something’s up.”

“It’s nothing,” Joey said.

“If it upsets you, it’s not nothing,” Pacey pointed out. “Come on, Jo. I don’t like seeing your beautiful face contorted like that!”

“Don’t say I’m beautiful,” Joey warned automatically.

“But it’s the truth. You are beautiful. Why can’t I say that? Does it embarrass you?”

“Yes.”

“OK, then you’re disgusting! You make me puke!” Pacey joked. Joey giggled. “Ah! A smile out of the ugliest creature in the world,” Pacey cried.

“You’re mad.”

“I know. And that’s what makes me lovable!” Pacey looked at her with puppy dog eyes, making her laugh. He reached out his hand, and tucked her hair behind her ear. His hand then moved to her lips. He traced them with his index finger. “Can I kiss you?” he asked.

“You’d better,” she whispered, her words lost in the kiss that engulfed them. His hands moved under her top, and ran up her back. He began to unhook her bra when she pulled away. “No, Pacey. Not now,” she said.

“I’m sorry Joey.”

“It’s not you…it’s just that…did you love Ms. Jacobs?” she asked. Pacey’s eyes almost popped out of his head.

“What?”

“I can’t compete with her unless I know what I’m competing with,” Joey explained impatiently. A look of understanding crossed Pacey’s face.

“With Tamara, it was exciting. It was dangerous - we could be caught at any moment. I think I loved that side of it, knowing I was doing something wrong. But this is so much better, Joey. Really, it is. Because I know you. I love you, and I know how to make you happy. And I’m happy when you are. You can never compete with her. You’ve already won. I want you, Joey. But I’ll wait until you’re ready. I promise. I don’t want to regret anything in this relationship. I respect you too much.” Pacey paused for breath. He looked at Joey with his eyes full of hope. She smiled.

“you just said you love me,” she said softly.

“I know,” Pacey replied, staring at her, waiting for a reaction.

“Pacey, I’m rapidly falling in love with you. Everyday, you do something that adds to my affection to you,” Joey explained.

“You’ve spent too much time with Dawson,” Pacey warned, smiling at her weird choice of words. Joey smiled. Pacey moved closer to her for a kiss. She deepened it, and lay back, pulling him on top of her.

Dawson looked up from the television at the familiar bang of someone entering the window. Sure enough, it was Joey. She was beaming as she joined him on his bed.

“It’s late for you to be here on a school night,” Dawson noticed. It was after 10.

“Well, I just came from home, so Bessie knows I’m OK,” Joey rambled.

“OK. what’s up?” Dawson asked.

“Why is it that you can both tell when something’s up?” Joey asked.

“Well, you either look like a manic depressive, or like you’ve swallowed a light bulb,” Dawson explained. “Right now, it’s the power supply.”

“I was talking to Pacey, and I told him all about Tamara and how I felt threatened,” Joey explained. “And he told me he loves me! Pacey Witter just told me, Josephine Potter, that he loves me!” Dawson grinned at the happiness evident in his best friend.

“what did you tell him?” Dawson asked. Joey frowned.

“That I was falling in love with him.”

“You didn’t tell him you love him too?”

“No. It wasn’t the right time. I want to tell him and really mean it, not call it out as I climb down a ladder or something. It needs to be special.”

“If you insist.”

“I do. Besides, I showed him I cared…”

“Did you two…?” Dawson asked, not able to fully digest the information.

“No! But we did a bit more than kiss…”

“OK! Too much information!” Dawson cried, covering his ears. Joey laughed.

“Sorry. But you said complete honesty,” she reminded him. “I’m gonna go. I’ll see you tomorrow, Dawson,” she said, dropping a kiss on his forehead. He smiled as he watched her climb out of the window.

The next afternoon, Dawson and Pacey were working in the video shop. Dawson knew his friend wasn’t really with it, but he began to laugh as Nellie tried once again to get his attention.

“Wet brain? Will you please listen to me!” she screamed, hitting him on the head with a video box. Pacey snapped out of his reverie.

“Ow! What was that for?” he asked.

“She’s been trying to tell you that now she’s here, you can go home,” Dawson explained, amused at his friend’s mood.

“Oh! Sorry. Nellie, how about I do your shift too? We’ll write you down as doing it, so you get paid still, OK?” Nellie paused for a moment, confused.

“What’s the catch?” she asked.

“There’s no catch, Nellie. So what do you say?” Nellie stared at him for a split second longer before grabbing her bag and running out of the shop before he could change his mind. Pacey smiled, and walked back up to the counter. Dawson shook his head.

“You’ve got it really bad,” he said. Pacey looked at him confused. “A little bird told me you told her you love her last night,” Dawson explained. Pacey grinned.

“I know. I never thought I’d say that about Joey, but it’s true! She just…I don’t know…she stimulates me mind, body and soul. I love being with her.”

“From what I hear, she stimulated your body quite a bit last night!” Dawson joked.

“Yeah. But it’s more than that, you know? It’s just so simple to be with her. I can tell her anything, and I know she won’t laugh at me. Hell, she’s even got me studying! Pacey Witter got an A on a test today!”

“Congratulations. I’m really happy for the both of you. Hey, have you decided what you want to do for your birthday next week?” Dawson asked.

“No. I haven’t even thought about it, to be honest. I guess nothing.”

“You can’t do nothing! You’ll be seventeen. Your last year as a child. We’ve got to do something. Hey, why don’t we do something, just the three of us? You, me and Joey?”

“Yeah. That’d be great. My two best friends. But what can we do?”

“I don’t know…hey! Why don’t we go to Boston or Providence for the day again? But instead of it being a macho thing, include Joey. I’ll even burrow the Mitch-Mobil! What do you think?”

“Sure! That sounds great. How about doing it next Saturday? The beauty of no school on my birthday!”

“Sure.”

End of Part One

What do you think? I’ve pretty much got the next parts planned out, ‘cause they need to follow Duchess’ guidelines. However, if you’ve got any small plot ideas, send them to me. If you send me one that I use, I’ll even use your name, or a name of your choice for a character! So e-mail me!
